Things we Yoopers do in the winter months here UP North. That’s how I’m categorizing today’s photos once again, since there are so many different things to do. We start in 2005, with a photo taken by Jonathan Hopper while driving the country roads around Chassell. Someone got quite creative and made a huge bear trap, with a snowmobile trapped in its jaws. Wouldn’t want to be the driver of that machine!

The next pastime is a good one for winter, taking a sauna. Frank Anderson snapped this photo back in 2007 of a young sauna Poikka (that’s boy in Finnish). A good hot sauna is the perfect way to warm up when winter’s days are bitter cold.

The third picture from 2011 is another of the things we do here in the winter...sometimes we get stuck! Peg Hardt captured this moment in time when they slid off the road and the other person is walking somewhere to get help. When the roads are icy, it doesn’t take much to slide off the edge and getting back on the road is easier said, than done.

Our current shot for today, comes from Sharon Bodenus on a recent excursion out to Presque Isle’s Black Rocks. Sharon found some interesting ice formations, commonly called “pancake ice” floating there and snapped a shot to share. But, not only did she take a still shot, she also made a video so we can enjoy the sights and sounds of Lake Superior ourselves, as we watch the “pancakes” float around on the moving waters.

I could listen to that sound for the rest of my
life....wowow....

That kid has the right idea. By now he should be about 14 or 15 so he
can probably take it a lot hotter than I can. Nowadays I can only take
it at about 100°C.

I remember seeing that trap with the snowmobile in it. I also remember seeing a flagpole caught in it.

Can you say clams on the half shell?

"Pancake ice in motion":
Is the video missing for anyone else beside (besides?) me?

Interesting, it's missing in Firefox Quantum v. 57.0.4 (64-bit) — it just shows as an empty frame — but it's visible using Google Chrome. That's a new wrinkle.

Oh, it's a "Farcebook" video. <Acck!> That must be the problem.

Even "curioser", I can click on the link (above) to Pasty Central's Facebook page, and that works in Firefox!
