Snow, snow, and more snow...that’s the norm for the U.P. this time of year and today’s archive photos show how it accumulates in various places. We start back in 2001 with a photo snapped by Jon Hopper on a night time drive on M26 just past Eagle River. Looks like the snowplows will be out working the roads in the morning.

In 2005, Joyce Tormala found some sturdy stemmed sunflowers holding a good foot or so of accumulated snow on its head. This shot still amazes me all these years later, since snow like this can be quite heavy and the aged stem of the sunflower isn’t that big around. Sturdy structure there for sure.

Judy Byykkonen had some help getting the up to 2 feet of snow off her roof last year in 2017. That’s her son and grandson up on the roof with the snow scoops. And if you think the job is done once they’ve shoveled those feet of snow off the roof, well look again... check out the pile of snow in front of the garage doors. Now that has to be removed, too! It’s a big job for sure.

Our video today was from an ABC10 UP newscast back in 2014, highlighting the importance of getting the snow off your roof and what can happen if you don’t. Watch and learn.

Great first pic, I'd love to be blazing that trail! Informative video, I love the U.P. but hate shoveling snow, couldn't see myself up on the roof, I'd fall for sure, and no one would find me until May! :=)) Gonna have to take that into account with retirement around the corner.

Have a nice weekend all, -5 in Commerce Twp. right now.

I thought the same thing UC, the first pic looks like an adventure.
Nice video, too! The anchorman reminds me of a brown-haired Max Headroom...high and tight baby, high and tight.

Hi
With regard to being up on roofs, there was a piece on NPR about "reckless decorating" (as in outdoor Christmas decorations). There was a guy who got too close to the edge of the roof, fell off onto a concrete driveway and hurt his back. He wasn't paralyzed but still has pain years later.

I don't know if a big pile of snow would provide any cushion.

There's something so serene about the first
picture. I just love it!
