You know that the theme throughout the winter months in the archives is going to be mostly about snow, since snow is what we do here in the Keweenaw once it arrives. Today's archive shots are perfect examples of that, starting with one from E. Neil Harri back in 2008. That's the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse with snowflakes falling all around it and lit up to guide the boats on Lake Superior.

Our second archive shot was snapped by Charlie Hopper, while his "better half" (a.k.a. Designated Scooper) did the honors of digging the family out of the three feet of snow that had fallen. It was a banner week for snowfall in 2009.

Then last year, in 2016, the Shoebox Memory shared the story of the Altadoc, which was grounded on Keweenaw Point during a three day storm, with the rescue of the crew beginning on Dec. 8, 1927. If you'd like to read about it and view a few more photos, check out Barb Koski's Facebook post. Just click on her name in this paragraph to view it. She has excerpts from Boatswain Anthony Gloza's log of the rescue that December day 90 years ago. Photos courtesy of Boatnerd.

Our video today was put together by the Smithsonian Channel and chronicles the Paul R. Tregurtha and what happens when a ship that size gets stuck in the ice. Not much they can do until Ice Cutters come to their rescue.

So good to see Edie!

The 2008 picture is beautiful ~ can't beat a good
lighthouse picture!

Nice photos today, and I agree with jbuck, nice to see MS.Edie, your "Designated Scooper" CH!! :=)

Very interesting and cool video! What does the crew do when stuck like that, extra sack time?? Is that thick ice a threat to the hull or a concern??

Just love the lighthouse picture, as always. And
that video was so cool. I wouldn't want to be on
one, but they are so cool to watch like that.

Great documentary from the Smithsonian.
So sad to learn the demise of Dan Kobasic, Basic Marine Escanaba has passed away recently of pancreatic cancer. A great mariner and person will be missed, please include him as part of your December memorial.
Thank you.
