Several of today’s archive photos appeared as “Shoebox Memories”. We start our look back into the archive of almost 20 years of photos, with a shot taken by Rudy Bylkas and shared back in 2001. Charlie got to know Rudy and his love of photography, while he was a resident at Still Waters. This was a photo Rudy took of his son, who passed away some years before Rudy, during one of their happy times exploring the shores of Lake Superior.

The next “Shoebox” photo comes from the C&H News and Views newsletter and was featured back in 2007. It shows four Copper Country miners getting ready for their shift down below ground. Each day as a miner's shift began, they would often refer to the transition as "waiting in the dry". These four gents are from left to right: Frank Perona, Art Dahlgren, John Silva, and Einard Ollila.

In the third shot, snapped by Melanie Hakala Rossi back in 2015, we get a glimpse of a railroad remnant, referred to by the locals in Lake Linden as the “Tunnel of Love”. This was most likely built by C&H and passed under the C&H Traprock Valley railroad, for the Houghton Country Traction Company street cars to travel between Calumet and Lake Linden. What a picturesque ride that must have been back in the day.

Today’s final photo isn’t historical, but just an example of what our weather here UP North is doing lately. Snow, then rain, then snow again. It’s here and then it’s gone and then it’s back again…snow that is. Brenda Leigh took this photo recently of her scarecrow decoration who seems pretty happy no matter what the weather is doing.

For our video viewing pleasure, we’re making a trip to the Delaware Mine UP in the Keweenaw, but the tour is going to be just a bit different than the normal one you take if you go there on any given summer day. Today we’re joining a dive team, as they explore the shafts that are submerged under water. Take a deep breath, here we go...

Donna: the water level in the deep shaft mines comes up to where ever the water table happens to be. When the mines were operating they had huge pumps that ran continuously to keep them dry. If the pumps were shut off they would eventually fill with water, but very slowly.

I believe they kept pumps running to remove the water while the mine was operating. Once the mines shut down, the shafts filled with water without the pumps removing it.

Awesome video! Now that takes a pretty big set.......of AIR TANKS, that is.
