Some interesting historical photos popped up in today's "look-back" in the archive of the past 19 years. The first photo of note was a Shoebox Memory in 2007, of Babe Ruth and Fungo Tedeschi, who had his 15 minutes of fame when he struck out Babe Ruth in Iron Mountain in the fall of 1926. Babe was there in town for an exhibition game with the local team.

The next historical photo appeared in a Shoebox Memory back in 2012, of the old Jacob Gartner's Store in Hancock. There is a wealth of history for the Gartner's Store on their website here: Gartners Gallery - About Us. Just a tidbit from their history... "Jacob Gartner and his son Isadore opened Gartner's Department Store at the corner of Tezccuco and Hancock Streets in Hancock, Michigan in 1886. Eventually business grew and a bigger store was secured on Quincy Street." So according to that quote from their webpage, the store is back to just about the same spot it began.

Our next historical photo is not an old photo, but shows the campus of the Houghton County Historical Society in Lake Linden. This aerial view was snapped back in 2015, by Nathan Miller of the Kite Aerial Photography fame. You can see #3 Steam Train there on the tracks, ready to give rides to excited visitors to the museum grounds.

The last photo, like the one above it, is not historical, in fact it was taken just a few weeks back, by my niece, Denise Gering, but the Bishop himself is historical. Denise was here for a family wedding and on their return trip home, they stopped at a number of Keweenaw sites that she remembered when her family used to come "home" for a visit, one of them being the Bishop Baraga Shrine on Keweenaw Bay. She was excited to be showing her son all the places she remembered as a kid his age.

Wish I could be there for the Bishop event, but it
was nice to visit the site in August when we were
there. His view is magnificent!
