The third Saturday of May is a day set aside to pay tribute to the men and women serving our country in the Armed Forces. The Archives yielded two of those dates when the Pasty Cam covered the way the Copper Country has honored these brave men and women. The cities of Houghton and Hancock have held a Parade of Thanks in the past and back in 2008, E. Neil Harri was flying overhead and captured the event as it was going down Quincy Street in downtown Hancock. From Neil's vantage point the people look like tiny ants.

Neil was out and about again in 2012 on this same date, but this time he was flying his plane further north, capturing an impressive photograph of the USS Kearsarge, located in the town that shares its name. This stone boat sits there as a monument of thanks to our local Veterans, built sometime around 1933 by local skilled labor and sponsored by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). In more recent years Calumet Township has spruced things up around the boat and turned it into a memorial to all known war veteran's from the township.

Another way the U.P. Honors our Veteran's who have served is with the numerous U.P. Honor Flights that take Veterans and a companion guide to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials there. Many of these men and women have never had the opportunity to view these monuments to their bravery. Today's video is a "trailer" about the U.P. Honor Flights, in particular Mission XI last year. Join them on this emotional tour that tells these Veterans THANK YOU for your service.

There is one thing for sure that chokes me up and brings tears to my eyes, that's videos like this one showing veterans.

According to the Honor Flight website, 640 WWII veterans pass away each day now.

The next flight scheduled is not yet posted. The most recent flight was just 2 days ago, May 17, 2017.

Beautiful video.

It's not just that these vets get to go see the memorials to their service but that every moment, from the send-off, to the time in DC, to the welcome home, they are told they are honored and loved and appreciated and respected for their service. That the children are being brought up and taught of their sacrifices thru things like 'mail call'. Thank you to everyone involved in honoring these vets.

Excellent points jbuck. There are so many ways our
veterans can be honored. Often the simplest of
efforts can be the most appreciated.
