Houghton is the largest city here in the Keweenaw area, so the Pasty Cam has visited there many times over the past 19 years. Sometimes we've covered big events, other times just the small everyday things that go on each day on the south side of the Lift Bridge. Today we go back to 2012 for a glimpse of the Dee Stadium Zamboni as it empties the accumulation from smoothing out the ice. Not the most exciting event happening in Houghton, but definitely one that goes on behind the scenes and is not often thought about. Brian Rendel snapped that shot on the Houghton waterfront, with a peek at the Ranger III dockside, too.

Next we're treated to a look at Houghton from the top of Quincy Mine, taken back in 2002 by the Pasty.NET guys. At that distance it's hard to make out much detail, but I can see two buildings missing in this shot from fifteen years ago. The Canal Crossings Condos, which were built next to the Lift Bridge in 2008 and across the Canal, Roy's Pasties and Bakery, which relocated to the Houghton Waterfront back in 2013. Some of the changes throughout the years.

Something that doesn't change in Houghton is the hilly terrain that much of the residential area is built on. Those steep hills make for some interesting driving during the winter months, as today's video which has been viewed over 2M times. This makes me chuckle every time I watch it again, with the funny commentary of the young man taking the video.

I'm sure the driver wouldn't share this opinion, but that video is hilarious!

One of my favorite jokes my Grandpa told me when I
was a little boy:
"Didja hear about the silly Yooper who broke his
legs ice fishing?"

"He got run over by da ZAMBONI!"

"How to turn left in Houghton": Oh I love that video! I never had that experience, even on the lower end of Bridge Street before it was terminated at Montezuma but I certainly did learn one thing about approaching Shelden Avenue from the south:

Q: What do you call those snowbanks on the side of the north/south streets like Dodge Street, Pewabic Street, Quincy Street and the old Bridge Street?

A: Emergency brakes.

Incidentally, 'tis interesting to see how few of those streets still go all the way down the hill; so many have been diverted/re-routed.

I remember seeing that video...on TWC, I believe.

Ha! That driver seemed to be thinking the Brown Truck at the bottom of the hill was his emergency brake and decided to go for the left turn instead!
