Mackinac Island year round residents enjoy the peace and quiet of the winter months, with less tourist traffic. If I'm not mistaken, there's less horse traffic also, as I think the majority of the horses are brought to the mainland for the winter months. There are a few that stay on the Island for transportation, though. The sounds in the winter change from the click-clack of horse hooves to the hum of snowmobile engines, as that becomes the main transportation for the residents and the few tourists that do come to visit.

Back in 2014, Frank Paris was out on the island with a group of antique snowmobilers, a few of which are year round residents on the Island. They were the group's tour guides, showing them around and providing them with some good eats to warm up…chili, hot dogs and hot chocolate. Frank commented that it was the best snowmobile ride he ever took.

Today's video takes us to the Island for a look at the slower pace that the cold and snow bring to the usually bustling main street. It's the next best thing to being there!

Very nice! Have never been to the Island in Winter, tho was there one late October in the '70's when it was snowing. Don't think that counts!

I think it would be kinda neat to see it in the winter when all the hustle and bustle isn't there. I wonder what they use to clear the streets of snow.

Duane P. (Islandman43),

Maybe they pank it down with old fashioned rollers!!

By Duane P. (Islandman43) on Monday, March 13, 2017 - 04:09 pm:

It could well be that you are correct. I thought they only panked things in the UP but I found out different.

To pat down until flat, compressed // To pack or tamp a loose type of material into a more compact mass

Origin: Northeastern Pennsylvania, or as we calls it: NEPA! (pronounced 'Knee-Pa')

"Ay Bobby, hows about yous and me drive up de eynon ta da Arch-a-bald pothole anz pank some dirt inta it ta fill it up even"

Also I remember back in my youthful days when someone went on a long walk folks would tell him "That's quite a pank."

Been snowing all day. I've been land-locked, but thank goodness for the cloud. I'm ready for daffy dills, two lips, and lye locks. Y'all didn't know I was a botulist, did ya?

Duane P. (Islandman43),

What?!!! NEPA!!! You can't be serious! This is very disillusioning! I've never heard of the long walk usage.

You are a man of many talents! But i've only heard of 'lie locks'. Maybe that's another regional spelling. ;-o

I wouldn't mind spending a Winter weekend on Mackinac Island.

I actually think I'd enjoy spending some winter
quiet time on Mackinac Island. The video made it
look very inviting!
