The Michigan Tech Winter Carnival is always a big event here in the Copper Country. The activities that go on during the event are way too numerous to mention, but I'm going to venture to say that the most popular of all is the Snow Statue Building. Mary Schmitt took her grandkids to check out the statues and from their smiles, they must have had a great time.

Year after year, these Engineering students manage to build statues, with amazing details. It's always a wonder as to how they do what they do with just snow and of course applying what they've already learned toward their engineering degrees. This year the theme was: Snow Cascades Across the Decades.

Check out the MTU Winter Carnival webpage for more photos and the winners of the competitions: Winter Carnival 2017.

Nice pictures. It looks like the grandkids enjoyed their excursion. The students that worked on those statues are industrious, ingenious, inventive and now that it is over, they are in out of the cold.

This year the theme was:

Quote:

Snow Cascades Across the [sic] Decades.

Over the years ("decades") they've done a bit better with the "theme".
To preserve the traditional meter of the Winter Carnival theme, this one would sound better as:

Quote:

"The Snow Cascades Across Decades"

But what do "injuneers" know about English, never mind poetry? 😉

["English is a dying language!"]

My favorite statue over the years was the enormous Buddha right next to — and nearly as tall as — the old Sherman Gym (ca. 1958-1959?); it wasn't terribly elaborate with precise, extremely fine detail as in some other statues over the years, but it certainly was impressive!

I don't remember precisely, but I think the theme that year was "Around the World in Eighty Days", or something very similar, from the movie of the same name (1956).
