Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Saturday, February 4, 2017 - 08:21 am:

Brian Rendel was heading out to visit his folks, driving along the Tamarack Waterworks road and Dextrom Road, when he passed by these dog sled teams out training for the upcoming dog sled races here UP North, the UP200 in Marquette, which takes place February 16th - 19th and/or the Copperdog 150 in Calumet, being run March 3rd - 5th.

Recognizing the team in the first shot, Brian stopped his truck to snap a photo of them while they sped by. Then just a short time later he passed the other team, but didn't know who they were. How interesting to see that they do some of their race training in front of a four wheeler like that. I'm guessing it's to get them in shape for running, without having to pull the weight of the sled and musher. If you know for sure, please chime in. Inquiring minds want to know what else they do to get the team ready for the big races coming UP.

A job these dogs love!

Maybe they are a new towing service for broken-down
ATVs?

Get along little dogies!

By the smiles on their faces, you can tell they're
loving what they're doing. Fun pictures. One of
these years I will be UP there to witness one of
these races. But as always, it won't be this year.

Coming through Houghton last Sunday am on the way home I see the tech 'toots' have a good start on their snow sculptures for 2017. We had a real good time at Heikenpäivä Saturday. Lots of good friends and good music, Finnish music, plus.

Heikenpäivä on Saturday (Feb 5?)?
That event seems to have been kept a deep dark secret this year!

There was no earlier mention of it here, and even Google seems to know nothing about it at this writing!?

Not to speak too soon …

I just found a mal-formed link(!) on the City Of Hancock's web page (See City News) to the Heikenpäivä 2017 schedule (← corrected link)

… which is actually on The Finnish American Reporter's web page! At least I was able to reconstruct a valid link as shown above.

Apparently it's running from Fri, 01/13 through Mon, 02/06 this year.

Confusion reigns!

Oh, and here's the the Main Heikenpäivä 2017 page as well.

Mary says: I haven't been able to cover the Heikenpaiva in pictures yet this year, as no one has posted or sent me any photos of the events. If someone out there has any, send them on to me at: mdrew@pasty.com, please!

One year I hope to go to Heikenpaivää, and learn to speak Finnish
and read the Kalevala. Someday.
