Today's photos come to us from Sara Beth Huuki. She said this is the Lake Superior shoreline to the left of Mouth of the Gratiot River. I've been out to this location a number of times, but have never ventured further than right around the mouth there, so I've never seen the large slabs of rock like in Sara's first two shots. The smaller rocks in the third photo are what covers the shoreline right there where the river enters into Lake Superior.

How fun that Sara also captured two ladybugs on the rocks. At least I think they're ladybugs, but then again they could be these pesky Asian Beetle bugs that look much the same. Somewhere I read that the latter species bites…just what we need, another biting bug here UP North!

I believe what Sara photographed is one of very few exposures of the Nonesuch Shale north of the Lift Bridge. It's been a while since I've ventured out there so maybe I'll have to visit there to verify. There is also a good exposure of this in the Hancock City Beach.

And no Mary, those look like Asian Lady Beetles. It's not a close enough photo to tell, but the quickest way to tell the difference is that the Asian Lady Beetle has a white marking behind its head in the openings of what looks like a black M; true Ladybugs do not have this marking.

Nice pix, especially..."The Ladies"!
And as usual, a great review.

The coloration of the rocks reminded me of the ones I saw (many times) at Keystone Bay sitting in the water...best beach ever

Blue lake and rocky shore. Lovely.

Capt,

I took these photos about 1 to 2 miles south of
the mouth of the Gratiot River, along the shore
next to Cedar Bay Road.
