Many folks hunker down in their nice warm homes when the temperatures drop here in the Keweenaw, but not Jeff LaMuth and his friends. They bundle up, grab their ice climbing gear and head to the shores of Lake Superior, in search of solid walls of ice for climbing.

Jeff shot these photos on a recent climb in the Redridge area, where the walls are steep and the ice is rock solid and thick. I'm guessing that half the adventure is just getting there, walking along the iced in shore, looking for the "perfect" ice to begin their climb. I love the colors the ice takes on as it freezes. That really stands out in Jeff's second photo of the wall of ice they're approaching.

As a footnote…these guys are experienced climbers, having been at it for years. They use safety lines and equipment to make the climbing not only fun, but safe, too. So, please don't try this at home, unless like Jeff and his friends, you know what you're doing.

Nice pix and adventure.

...and thanks for the warning Mary, but the only thing I'll be climbing at home is...out of bed. :-)

Amazing pics! That looks like a fun thing to do! The
more you get outside-the less winter gets to you!

I'm glad Jeff and his friends made it out to take these pictures.
I believe I can safely say that I will not be attempting ice climbing
anytime soon.

I love that area. But I would NOT be out there
climbing those hills!! Great shots!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 - 09:00 pm:

Hey Paul,

From the forecast it looks like you may get enough to make it VERY white this weekend! Or are you too far North?
