Henry Sakari had his camera along at a Keweenaw logging jobsite recently and shared some of the photos he snapped of the logging operation. He mentioned that he thought this was something the general public doesn't get to see very often, since most logging operations happen deep in the woods off of rough, graded roads. He was correct on all counts, so we decided to bring this part of the logging process to the Pasty Cam.

The machinery pictured here today is a TimberPro log processor at work. It cuts the tree, removes the branches, cuts it to length and finally sorts the logs into bundles for the Forwarder to pick up and bring to the landing for the log truck drivers. Quite the operation and made much easier than days past, by the use of the large equipment you see here today.

The last photo is the finished product, stacked up and ready to be loaded onto the logging trucks for transport to wherever they'll end up, either at a lumber mill or perhaps as someone's winter wood supply to heat their home through the Keweenaw winter that will be here before you know it.

Awesome pics...I did that for over a year...was the best job I ever had...and the hardest...Of course I didn't get the luxury of sitting in the processor or skidder...I was a topper...still was fun...

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 09:58 am:

Quite the machine, reminds me of "The Terminator" movies. Oops, gotta answer the phone..."I'll be Bach".

It's the Leveler at FernGully.

LOL,You're going great guns this morning, Alex.;)
I've been behind some of those log trucks when we lived in MI and was always afraid something would give and all that lumber would fall on my car.

Cool pictures! Alex & Capt, I'll bet the three of us could clear that site in just an hour using chainsaws! lol

I get to work the bullhorn!

Hats off to these guys!!

Over the past decades the time it takes to cut down a tree has been reduced by a lot. Unfortunately, the time it takes to grow one has remained about the same.

MrFistyFist (Mrfist),

How did you top the trees? Sounds dangerous!!

By MrFistyFist (Mrfist) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 05:21 pm:

with a chainsaw...was dangerous, but fun...deer would walk up to cut down aspen and eat the leaves right in front of us...they didn't care...all they saw was food...as did I

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 07:05 pm:

Anyone ever see the movie "Sometimes a Great Notion", with Paul Newman & Henry Fonda? Classic logger movie.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 07:08 pm:

Alex ~ great movie but i couldn't stand the scene with the man slowly drowning as the tide came in!!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 08:21 pm:

That title sounds like words of a song from the '50s, 'Goodnight, Irene'.

By Just me (Jaby) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 08:42 pm:

I am amazed at the TimberPro. Had some logging done on
my property and watched it cut trees ,pick them up and
cut all the branches off and pile the logs. Great pics
. Very interesting machine and process!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 09:04 pm:

But MrFistyFist (Mrfist), how did you get to the tree tops? Did you climb up? In a cherry picker??

Yes, sounds a bit dangerous!!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 09:23 pm:

Jbuck, that was an intense scene...what a great flick.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 09:34 pm:

Sure thing UC; make mine a "jhonny-red"!

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 11:25 pm:

Don't wish to rain on the logger parade, but are they replanting, or will the Northwoods be gone someday except for the ones they leave along the highways to make you thing you're in the Northwoods?

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Friday, October 30, 2015 - 11:26 pm:

"think"

By Heikki (Heikki) on Saturday, October 31, 2015 - 02:31 am:

Not to worry, Greta. Those harvesting forest crops
have a greater interest in forest renewal than
tourists. It's their livelihood. There are
different methods to the process. Replanting is
one of them.

Autumn colors and firewood for Winter.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, October 31, 2015 - 09:52 am:

My grandpa used to sing "Goodnight, Irene" to my
grandma all the time...that was her name.

I wish they'd cut most of the trees down from
along the scenic routes along all of the lakes.
Half of the time there's no scenery to see except
for trees, when you're really wanting to see the
lakes. I'm not only talking about the big lakes,
but also smaller ones, like Portage. It's so
frustrating, especially at scenic overlooks, when
the only thing you see are trees.

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Saturday, October 31, 2015 - 12:15 pm:

Glad to hear they replant!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Saturday, October 31, 2015 - 05:38 pm:

But MrFistyFist (Mrfist), how did you get to the tree tops? Did you climb up? Use a belt? Yes, sounds a bit dangerous!!
