We have featured sunset photos quite often on the Pasty Cam, with one at the end of each month and then a few others thrown in here and there, but I don't think we've ever had the pleasure of watching the sun set in various stages, so today's photos will be a special treat. Sit back and let the stress of being back to work on a Monday, fade away for a few moments while you enjoy the setting Keweenaw sun.

This is one of Joe Kirkish's favorite places in the Keweenaw, Great Sand Bay. He said he was on his way from the cottage in Copper Harbor, returning to Houghton and he saw the sun reaching a point where it would make a nice sunset shot. Once he stopped and snapped the first photo, he decided to remain there in the area to follow the sun's gradual change as it was setting, along with the Bay changing, too. He followed it right to the cloud's last brilliant gasp, then he said he left, feeling the pleasure of having witnessed another of nature's remarkable surprises!

Very nice...I wonder if it eventually rained that night.

Beautiful pix, Joe. Thanks for hanging around watching.;)

Bet we have all done the same thing at some time ~ it's amazing the transformation a sunset can go thru and how quickly it changes!

Nice framing; the beach grass version is my favorite.

Nice pix Joe! Wish I could be U.P. there taking in a sunset or two!

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, September 14, 2015 - 12:49 pm:

Very nice Joe!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, September 14, 2015 - 01:16 pm:

An excellent bit of photography as usual, Joe.

However, I repeat my unfulfilled challenge of Friday, January 13, 2012:

Your next (photographic) mission, Mr. Briggs, er … Mr. Phelps, er … Mr. Kirkish, if you choose to accept it, is to catch a (click →) Green Flash at sunset over Superior!

See also: (click →) Green Flash.

The challenge is still open to any other intrepid photographer, for that matter!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, September 14, 2015 - 02:36 pm:

FRNash: that is very interesting.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, September 14, 2015 - 03:35 pm:

Still more fascinating information about the rare green flash phenomenon, and Atmospheric Optics in general …
1. (click →) The Green Rim.
(and the much more elusive Blue Flash!)
2. (click →) Multiple Blue and Green Flashes.
3. (click →) The Inferior Mirage.
(See the menu on the left side of each page for even more.)
Photographic challenges all.

Beautiful sunset.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, September 14, 2015 - 08:49 pm:

It's going to take a good photographic rig with a large lens (400mm+) and the right conditions to capture a green flash on Lake Superior. I've tried the past couple times and managed to get it somewhat this past July, but I know I can do better....
