In May of 1954 construction began on the Mackinac Bridge, and in November of '57 it opened for business. But the big celebration came the next spring, with parades and speeches and lots of visitors from around the country. See more of the memories at MightyMac.org, along with pictures of the 50th anniversary parade and celebration. Hear about the initial plans for the bridge in today's Pasty Central Day in History. The 58th annual Bridgewalk is planned for September 7th, at the end of the tourism season that is just now beginning.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend, and have a good week :o)

I would have loved to see that parade. That is a pretty impressive lineup of Oldsmobiles. I think the most entertaining marching band is the Henry David Thoreau Marching Band.....they all march to the beat of a different drummer.

Janie T. Most people like the '57 Chevy but my personal fave is the '58 Chevy.

Duane; a friend of mine had a '58 Chevy Impala, black with all the chrome trim and red interior, what a beautiful car.

That was certainly a great day for Michigan.

Back in the 60's my oldest sister had a 58 Impala black w/red interior and all four Beatles bobble head dolls on the dash!
