Our day in history for March 29 talks about the fur trade empire of John Astor, but the real wealth was generated through investment of those profits. In its time, "Astor House" was synonymous with luxurious lodging, and his properties and real estate holding became a money-making machine for his heirs. One early example of those properties was this one on Mackinac Island (with thanks to the Library of Congress). Wonder if they served pasties?

It looks like it was patterned quite a bit like the Grand Hotel.

The Astor House was built over 50 years before the
Grand Hotel.
