Gary Lassila was on hand with his camera at the ready recently, when the Calumet Laurium Keweenaw 7th and 8th grades completed their final visits to the Copper Country Curling Club for gym class. How neat is that? These kids were given instruction in the sport of curling, by CCCC member and CLK Physical Education teacher, Steve Parks. What a great way to introduce the kids to a different winter sport that they can enjoy right here in the Copper Country.

The Club has renovated the old Calumet & Hecla Drill House building, located near the Calumet High School, for their curling rink facility, in cooperation with the Keweenaw Historical National Park and Calumet Township. Included in their historical facility are two sheets of ice, locker rooms, a concession and social area, a raised viewing area, along with storage and their physical plant. There is also room reserved for future expansion, with a second wing where two more sheets of ice can be added.

It sure looks like a fun sport to get young kids interested in and combining it with a bit of mining history of the area really makes it a great teaching/learning experience all rolled up in fun!

Do they curl in the summer time as well? If so, Nat and I will be in the Keweenaw this summer so if they do, we'll have to try it out.

What a great facility!

That is simply FANTASTIC...we have so many beautiful
old buildings that need and deserve new life!
Congrats to all involved! Way to go!!!

It's nice to see the younger set partaking in a very old sport that is relatively new to the area. Hats off to all involved in setting this up for the gym class. I am sure some of the students will develop more than a passing interest in the sport.

Very nice! And Capt., just in case you don't make it UP:

Oh we're going to make it UP this summer, Alex. It's just a question of whether they'll have ice for curling in July. If not, I suppose "Virtual Curling" will have to do.

Great pics! I think it is wonderful how that old
building is being put to such good use! Curling looks
to be very much fun!

It's awesome what they're doing with old
buildings, but I have never understood the sport
of curling. I remember watching it a very long
time ago with my dad on CBC probably. Not much of
a fan but it's nice to see these younger people
enjoying it.
