All across the U.P., you'll find barns dotting the landscape, some in disrepair and ready to collapse, others in the process of being cared for and fixed up. Today, Brenda Leigh treats us to a few pictures of both kinds of barns, the falling down and fixing up. Several of these amaze me that the strong gusts of wind we've experience with the winter storms we've been having, haven't just completely blown in what's left of the walls. Of course the barn in the third photo doesn't have any walls to blow down, so the wind just whistles on through, leaving the walls framed and holding up the roof.

Now Brenda's last photo is quite interesting. She said it was a first for her, as all the years living here in the U.P. she's never seen someone's car wrapped up in a blanket, so she had to turn around to go back and take a picture of it to share with us all. Someone loves their car so much, they even wrapped up the engine so it wouldn't get so cold

Awesome....as usual!

Love barns, but hate to see them rotting away. Ours collapsed several years ago ~ I still miss it.:(
When we lived in ND, we bought a new car and had an engine heater installed so all we had to do was plug it into an outlet ~ no blanket needed.;>

I'm with you Shirely ~ hate to see the old barns go. Good to see the one is being patched up; the other looks like they sold off the siding. Back in the day there were crews which would go thru and paint barns at a reasonable rate. You'd drive thru an area and most of the barns would be newly painted, so you'd know they had been there!

It's probably an electric blanket.

The big red barn that was here on our farm had to have a section tore down to make for road widening. Then when we built our newer house, we donated the barn and the old farm house to many small township fire dept. they used them to practice drills and we got rid of the two structures. Win - win!

Great collection of barn pictures. Barns are an integral part of our history and it is sad to see them slowly disappearing from the landscape. The days of knowing the people that you bought your eggs and milk from were far better days. It's hard to call a corporation a friend and watch their children grow.

I totally agree with you, Duane!

The only times I've seen cars wrapped in blankets in da UP, they've been white blankets, usually covering the whole car, too! 😉

It just hurts my heart to see barns falling down
like that. So sad....

But here's a funny story: The only winter I spent
in the UP was when I was a (quite) young adult.
Every space in our parking lot had an outlet to
plug in a heater, but ours didn't work! So what
did we do? On really cold nights, we took the
battery out and took it inside with us!!! LOL!

I recall many nights at NMU where the cars were plugged into extension cords run into the dorm windows. If you lived on the 3rd floor (like we did) you were out of luck!
