When Paul Roberts and his Dad were here in the U.P. exploring, they found some interesting things. One of which is the log building pictured here today. He said it was at the base of a ski path, about 5 miles from Whitefish Bay, near Strongs.

They found it when they turned off M28 and took Salt Point Road all the way north, to Lake Superior. It was along this road, that they came across the log shelter, put there for skiers and snowmobilers to warm up in. There is a wood stove with benches surrounding it and of course firewood stacked along one wall, ready to warm up the next group that need a rest stop along their way. The sign on the front says U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and there is also a "donation" box provided, should those using the building want to help with the upkeep.

What a great way to end an outdoor adventure, by sitting around the wood stove, warming your hands and feet, discussing the events of the day you spent out on the U.P. trails.

Kindness is like a boomerang,
it always returns.

Wow...what a civilized concept. If that building were in SE-MI, it would be stripped bare of anything valuable by vandals :-(

Not to mention painted in psychedelic colours....

Cozy looking little building, but I'll bet that concrete floor never warms up.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, February 26, 2015 - 09:39 am:

I'm feeling warmer already!

By Just me (Jaby) on Thursday, February 26, 2015 - 10:31 am:

What is warm? Great pics anyway!

A building to warm the body and a concept to warm the heart.

Well-said, Duane.

Seeing this reminds me of the tragedy of Dr. Leslie & Faye Purman at Pine Stump Junction. If only they had found their way to a shelter like this....

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, February 27, 2015 - 08:23 am:

It would take too long for me to sit and warm my
hands and feet after being outside these days.
Great pictures, though!

By Robert A. Drake (Eor2015) on Thursday, March 5, 2015 - 01:24 pm:

Backrests on the benches would be very helpful to
tired skiers and others. Cabins are a great idea!
