Waking to a blanket of new snow today in the U.P., I thought it would be a good time to revisit vintage snowmobiles. A link to this video was previously posted, but it's the first time to be embeded here in Cam Notes (and also on today's Facebook entry.)

Midway through the video, the two snowmobiles in the third shot above collide as they speed up a hill. We would really be curious if any of these young guys can be identified. If they were 30 in this video, they would be about 80 today.

Stay warm. Have a good week :o)

Those look like the first snowmobiles I remember seeing when we moved to PA in the 1970s. There wasn't any need for them in the South where we had lived until then. I didn't like them very much because of the noise!;>

OMG, that video is hilarious!!! And yes, Shirley,
I remember the NOISE -- it was awful! That's still
what I think of when I think of snowmobiles!

OMG...I was a lil' kid, Grandpa had one of those big
old Evinrude snow machines....that thing had a
Reverse gear/lever on it too! And everyone had red
suits...Deer Hunters were required to wear Red while
hunting, back then...this was prior to "Hunter
Orange"...wow...thank you for the memories! That put
a huge smile on my face!!!

I remember the snowmobiles in the '60's.

That noise contributes $ to the economy to the snowmobiling destinations!!!

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Monday, January 5, 2015 - 06:38 am:

I know, Janie -- that noise says 'ka-ching',
doesn't it?

By Tom (Tom) on Monday, January 5, 2015 - 10:50 am:

What memories! The first snowmobile I ever drove was a Husky. Later I owned Foxtrac and Skidoo.
The best was the Skidoo. We had races at the Iron County Fair Grounds in the 60s. Lap races and cross country. The local JayCees,of which I was a member, sponsored the races. We had a lot of fun with that for several years. I moved to Illinois and that ended the snowmobiles for my family. The machines ended up with my parents in the CC.

For those interested in vintage snow mobiles, John Dee is raffling off one as part of his ride in to benefit the Make a wish foundation.

Check here.

I just LOVED watching that video!! Gave me some great laughs, and it brought back some memories for me too. My first snowmobile ride was on a Skidoo (1964?) on my uncle's farm. My brother took me for a ride through the tall wet grass after it rained. It worked pretty good! LOL!! So now you know, who needs snow to go for a putt!
Not sure if my uncles knew about that one. HA!

Thanks for the vid, Charlie!!

Vintage! I had a friend who owned a couple of Raider snowmobiles back in the 70s, one gold and one white. It had a cockpit that you sat in with a rear-mounted engine and man, they were screamers.

The movie above was taken by my dad. He left us many hours of home movies that are just priceless. I've been having them digitized as budget allows. I've been posting some clips I think might be of general interest-- glad folks are enjoying them!

How nice for you, Robert, that your dad left you

The first picture looks to be of my Uncle Tom Moyle Sr. It was taken at my Grandpa Moyles farm in Laurium.

You are right, Cousin Karen, that is him.
