Dick lives in Wisconsin but I think that he would rather live in the U.P. Many thanks to Dick for also sending me photos of the Copper Range diesels after they left the Copper Range. I would love to post them here but I don't have the permission to do so. It is great to see the Copper Range Railroad logo and red and white running around New Jersey and Pennsylvania in 1973-74. The Photos of Dick Bates

The photo to the left is one which hangs on the wall of the Superior View Restaurant in Freda. The photo is owned by Leo Durocher of Freda. The larger one above is my version (K Musser) of the same photo. I always thought the kids were in the way, if you didn't already notice. Thanks to Dick and to Leo for providing this photo. By the way the photo was taken by Margaret Rowland and the two boys in the photo are Joe Kylman and Mike Rowland. The photo was taken in September 1966. Thank you as well to Carolyn Rowland for the background information on the photo.

(It is a photo of one of the last Copper Range rock train to Freda)

The Copper Range Roundhouse and Shops from Hancock, 1975.

The end of the Keweenaw Central car shed
This railcar was owned by the Keweenaw Central (tourist line) and was housed in the car shed seen on the ground around it. The shed was crushed by snow in the great winter of 78-79. You can see the tender of #29 on the right.
Dick Bates photo taken in 1979.

Here is a photo Dick shot of the DSS&A coaling tower in Marquette. It was taken in 1976, one year later it was gone.

Copper Range #200, Baldwin S-12
This is a photo Dick took in the summer of 1996. Copper Range Baldwin S-12 #200 is seen here stting idle in Mellen Wisconsin.

LS&I RS-3 #1604
This photo was taken by Dick Bates in the summer of 1996 in Mellen, Wisconsin. If you were wondering what was lurking behind #200 last week, well this was it. #1604 is a 1600 h.p., Phase I, RS-3 built in September 1950. It weights 247,000lbs. and has a tractive effort of 61,575lbs. It spent most of its life in Munising, being the "Musining Switcher" in the 1970's. Stop back next week for a view of 1604 in the 70's.

LS&I RS-3 #1604
This photo was taken in 1976 when #1604 was know as the "Munising Swithcer". At the time this was taken, it was just pulling into Marquette with the way freight from Munising, I think it was about 4-5 cars long. A couple of CNW pulpwood cars for interchange & a couple boxcars of paper. It was the first time I saw an LS&I Caboose in the new green paint scheme,a photo of same will be coming shortly.

More of Dick's photos in the weeks to come.
