Honoring The Memory

An angel of God said to the devote Cornelius: “Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.” Acts 10:4

Cornelius, a Centurion of the Italian Band of soldiers of the armies of Rome was a devote gentile who served the Lord by serving the people of Israel. The Lord recognized his devotion, as a memorial before God, and sent an angel to give him a message to call Peter to come to his home. Peter then went to Cornelius’s home and preached Jesus to them. While he was still proclaiming the Word of the Lord, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the Word, and Peter then commanded that they all would be baptized.

Many events occur daily in our lives that are spoken of, ‘loudly and widely’ throughout our country, but much of it is an emphasis on the ‘bad’ things that people do. Most of the ‘good’ things, the real important things, that which emphasize the memorable deeds of God and mankind are rarely mentioned. But God remembers, and so should we. Memorial Day is that special day of remembrance. The following description describes its history.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who died in military service for their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. Some Americans use Memorial Day weekend to also honor family members who have passed away. Church services on the Sunday prior to Memorial Day may include a reading of the names of members who have died during the previous 12 months.
