Prudential awards defibrillator grant to township fund
COPPER HARBOR ’Äì A Prudential Insurance representative has presented a grant for $2,000 to Grant Township’Äôs First Responder fund, township board members learned early this week.
John Tauren, Prudential representative from Calumet, officially presented the award to the township at its regular monthly meeting Monday, Sept. 11, at the Copper Harbor Community Center.
This grant is part of Prudential's Helping Hearts Program, started in 1994 to aid volunteer Emergency Medical Service (EMS) squads purchase semi-automatic cardiac defibrillators. To date
the program has committed $4.5 million in grants to help 2,400 EMS squads across the United States.
According to Eileen Plescher, Grant Township first responder, "The defibrillator cost was $3,277.47. This grant let us get it much sooner than we could have otherwise, giving us
a life-saving capability we did not have. Those first minutes are so crucial and ambulances are far away."
Trustee Richard Tester said the Copper Harbor Volunteer Fire Department had one call-out this past month to Lake Fanny Hooe for a brush fire.
Gary Barker, Lac La Belle department fire chief, reported the Lac La Belle VFD recently welcomed Paul Campbell as a new member. He added they had no call-outs but were temporarily out of
service due to equipment repair.
The new Copper Harbor Fire Hall is on schedule and within budget, noted Richard Powers, Volunteer Fire Department member. The board authorized a second payment of $101,583.20 to Moyle
Construction. A meeting was held Wednesday to discuss future uses for the present fire hall area. (A report on that meeting will follow soon.)
In other business the board:
- Heard a presentation by Paul Campbell inviting one and all to attend an informational meeting to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 23, at the Mohawk School Gymnasium. The purpose
is to provide information on developing a Comprehensive Land Use Plan for Keweenaw County. (Watch for coming article on that meeting.)
- Heard and approved the minutes of the August 14 regular township board meeting, adding the correction that a temporary public telephone has not yet been installed at Lac La
Belle.
- At the request of Don Kauppi, Copper Harbor Downtown Development Authority chairman, authorized final payments for the 6th Street Waterfront Improvement Project. Payments are
$$24,309.50 to Paul Nakkula Construction, $2,750.00 to Northern Consultants and $520.71 to Crampton Surveying, for a total of $27,580.21.
- Heard from Don Kauppi that a joint DDA and Maritime Museum meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19, in the Copper Harbor Community Center.
- Learned from Richard Powers, 911 Committee member, that the 911-related township road-naming is nearly complete. The project is moving slowly because funding checks haven't been as
large as anticipated, but after receipt of the third payment in November an addressing company will be hired. (Watch for a report on Keweenaw County 911 coming soon.)
- Tabled a motion setting forth requirements for non-township-related use of all township buildings until the insurance company could be contacted about exact requirements of the
Certificate of Insurance they have asked be provided for such use. A $100.00 deposit is also required to cover the $100.00 deductible in the township policy.
