Ski Tigers tops in Minocqua cross-country race

The Copper Country Ski Tigers took four of the six first places at the recent Howard Young Cup races in Minocqua, Wis. HOUGHTON ’Äì The Copper Country Ski Tigers dominated the Howard Young Cup cross-country ski race on March 3, taking first place in four of the six races. Ski Tigers also earned three second places and one third place. Eleven area racers participated in the event, held in Minocqua, Wisconsin.

Jay Woodbeck of Hancock won the boys’Äô 9-11 age division, while Karen Oppliger of Hancock took the girls’Äô 9-11-year-old title. Rachel Toczydlowski of Calumet was second in the girls’Äô division. Alan Toczydlowski won the boys’Äô 8-and-under division, and Laminga's Kai Sharp took second. Louise Oppliger won the girls’Äô 8-and-under division and Ruth Oppliger was third in that event. Ryan Tervo of Chassell placed second in the 12-and-up division.

The 8-and-under and 9-11 division skied a 2-kilometer course, while the 12-and-up group skied a 4-km loop.

Also participating were Madeline Shoup of Houghton, Karl Szyfzkoski  of Chassell and four-year-old Isabel Sharp.

The Ski Tigers will host the final race of the season this Saturday, when they participate in the Junior Bear Chase at the Swedetown trails near Calumet. Races begin at 2 p.m.


The Ski Tigers group teaches cross-country skiing to Copper Country youth of all ages. The group meets at 2 p.m. every Saturday at Swedetown Trails in Calumet. About 75 young skiers are involved. For more information call Michael or Christine Young at 482-1308.
