’Äì This year's "Heritage Celebration
2001" will be held from Friday through Sunday,
June 29 and 30 and July 1, in historic Calumet.
’ÄúWe believe there will be much
fun and all who attend will really enjoy the
three-day festival,’Äù said organizer Lucy Nakkula.
At
4:30 p.m. on Friday, Calumet
Theatre Director Dick Hazzard will host a live WBKP-TV

in the Theatre Ballroom with music, dancing and
refreshments at a cost of $5.00 per person, payable

Saturday
will be a full day with games, crafts,

the park pavilion, a "storytelling" project
will allow residents to be videotaped telling of
their memories of earlier days in Calumet and
surrounding areas.
A
puppet show and puppet-making demo, a "book
signing" by the author of a new historical
novel, mule and wagon rides, "genaeology
scrapbooking" and a talent contest will be part
of Saturday’Äôs program. The "Future
Historians," a new organization made up of
children from the Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw (CLK)
schools, will be role-playing while dressed as
children from the period ca. 1870 and demonstrating
games and chores of that era.
Antique
cars may be viewed on Fifth Street, while musicians
and other entertainers will perform at various spots
around town.
Businesses in town
will extend and expand their hours for the three-day
event and will offer sidewalk sales. Jim's,
John's and the Evergreen restaurants will be
featuring ethnic foods and also staying open late.
All museums will be open free
to the public on Saturday. "The Friends of
Fashion" will offer a vintage fashion show at 2
p.m. in the Theatre Ballroom with a fee of $5.00 per
person to be paid at the door.
Roving photographers will snap
pictures of people around town who are dressed in
period costume and who would like to be entered in
the "Period Clothing Contest." There will
be two categories ’Äì vintage and created ’Äì and
the winners will be announced from the soundstage in
Agassiz Park later Saturday afternoon. Prizes will
be awarded for many of the events.
Sunday kicks off with a tour of
churches from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Pamphlets will be
available concerning the history of each church. A
parade of antique vehicles and other items will
