BARAGA
’Äì The
23rd annual Keweenaw Bay Maawanji’Äôiding, or
Gathering of People, will again honor the earth with
dance, song and drum from Friday, July 27, through
Sunday, July 29, at the Ojibway Campground, just
north of Baraga on U.S. 41. Hosted by the Keweenaw Bay Indian
Community (KBIC), the Maawanji’Äôiding
brings
together multiple generations of Native Americans
from the Great Lakes area. The weekend events ’Äì
including a variety of traditional dances, songs and
drums, adult and youth two-step competitions and
fry-bread making contests ’Äì are open to the
public.

Jingle Dress
Also, there is Inter-Tribal Dancing, Sneak-up,
Crow-Hop and Hoop Dancing.
Host Drum is Tree Town Singers from Ann
Arbor, Michigan
Co-Host Drum is Lake Vermilion Singers from Tower,
Minnesota
Head Dancers are Vincent Bender, Jr and
Beatrice Bender (brother & sister)
from the Bad River Reservation in Odanah, Wisconsin.
Head Veteran Dancer is Jim St. Arnold of
Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.
Head Youth Dancers are Shiloh Lussier and
Cody Blue, both of the Keweenaw
Bay Indian Community.
MCs are John Baily from the Grand River Odawa
Nation, Bucko Teeple from Bay Mills Indian
Community, and Ted Holappa from Keweenaw Bay Indian
Community.
During the week, our traditional teachers
have been: Daintry Kewayosh, a
Potawatomi/Odawa/Ojibway from Walpole Island; Mark
Bruder, an Ojibway from Manitoulin Island; Wes
Whetung, an Ojibway from the Curve Lake First
Nation; Leona Stevens, an Ojibway from the
Mississauga First Nation; Vicki Dowd, Potawatomi
from the Hannahville Indian Community; Donnie Dowd,
Ojibway from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community; and
Ted Holappa, Ojibway from the Keweenaw Bay Indian
Community.
