Re: Tip of the Keweenaw Sale
#01-196
Dear Trust Fund Board Member:
We are writing in
support of the proposed purchase by the State of
Michigan of land labeled the ’ÄúTip of the Keweenaw.’Äù
This land with its beautiful waterfalls, Lake
Superior shoreline and inland lakes has, without
question, the characteristics necessary to be an
asset to the State of Michigan.
In addition, the property is of vital
importance to the Copper Country’Äôs tourism-based
economy with its tremendous recreational activities,
including: biking,
hiking, camping, boating, skiing, snowshoeing,
sightseeing, fishing and hunting.
International
Paper Company/Lake Superior Land Company, the owner
of the land, has hinted at breaking up the land into
small parcels for sale to private owners. This means a loss of public access. What a rare and crucial
point in time for the State of Michigan to have the
opportunity to purchase such a large parcel for
public use.
Please
give careful consideration to this
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the purchase of
the ’ÄúTip of the Keweenaw.’Äù
Thank
you!
Sincerely,
