Harbor's Popeye Run ...

Bill Smith of Marquette,
founder and organizer of the Popeye Run, explains
procedures and safety precautions to participants
before the start of the 10 K and 5 K races Saturday
morning, July 7, near the Eagle Harbor Township Hall
and finish line.
Race

Men's and Women's 10 K Run. These participants ran
the whole length of the Eagle Harbor cutoff road
from U.S. 41 to the village of Eagle Harbor
’Äì about six
miles.
Some
walkers started early and finished the course before
the runners. Among the first walkers to cross the
finish line were Eagle Harbor summer residents Carol
Bogart of Arlington, Texas; her nephew Adam McKenney
of Willis, Texas; and their dogs, from left, Spot,
Rosie and Mikey. At far left, Eagle Harbor resident

Aaron
Wilson, 10, crosses the finish line of the Men's 5 K
Run, winning third place with a time of 22:41. Aaron
is the son of Cassie and Bob Wilson of Lansing and
Agate Harbor. Cassie placed second in the Women's 5
K race with a time of 24:01. As Deputy Director for
Governor John Engler's State Government Affairs
Division, Cassie
presented a symbolic check for $255,242 to
Eagle Harbor Township for acquisition of land to be
used for recreation and preservation of natural
features. She presented the grant money to the
township on behalf of Governor Engler and the
Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund.

Aaron
