LAC LA BELLE ì Keweenaw or Houghton County voters who registered by mail and have not yet voted in that county must vote in person the first time
voting. However anyone who registered in person at either a Secretary of States office or a township clerks office may receive an absentee ballot.
Some exceptions are made for certain members of the Armed Forces overseas, handicapped persons and persons at least 60 years of age.
The law, with its exceptions, is stated as follows:
168.509t Person considered registered voter; persons required to vote in person; exceptions; prosecution not precluded in state.
Sec. 509t. (1) Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, a person who is a qualified elector in this state and who registers to vote in
a manner consistent with the national voter registration act of 1993, is considered a registered voter under this act.
(2) A person who registers to vote in a jurisdiction in this state by mail shall vote in person if that person has not previously voted in person in
that jurisdiction. This subsection does not apply to any of the following registered voters:
(a) A person entitled to vote by absentee ballot under the uniformed and overseas citizens absentee voting act, Public Law 99-410, 100 Stat. 924.
(b) A person who has a handicap as defined in section 103 of the Michigan handicappers civil rights act, Act No. 220 of the Public Acts of 1976,
being section 37.1103 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, or who is 60 years of age or older. (c) A person who is entitled to vote other than in person
under any other federal law.
(3) This section does not preclude this state from prosecuting a violation of this act that is also a violation of any federal election or voting
rights law. History: Add. 1994, Act 441, Imd. Eff. Jan. 10, 1995.
An application for an absentee ballot can be obtained from the township clerk. The absentee ballot is issued when the application has been signed
and returned to the clerk. These ballots must then be completed and returned to the township clerk by the August 8 primary date.
In the August 8 primary election voters must vote a straight ticket either Republican or Democrat. In the November 7 election
voters can split their vote.
