Keweenaw Krayons
Artist-Mentor Clyde Mikkola of Calumet gives tips on
technique to two young Keweenaw Krayons budding artists--Jenny Isaacson, 8, and Elizabeth Gundlach, 7, both of
Mohawk - at the Ramblin' Rose Garden Gallery in Mohawk. The girls were in their second week of The Masters project,
preparing one of the large panels with replicas of famous art works to be exhibited in Mohawk for the Rural Arts
Conference July 6-9. They were replicating Edgar Degas' "Dancer with Bouquet." The project allows local youth, under
the guidance of adult volunteers, to learn about famous painters and to imitate their techniques.
Keweenaw County Arts Coordinator Darlene Basto, right, of Sedar Bay, admires Tess
Steube's efforts to replicate a detail from Claude Monet's "Woman with Parasol." Steube, 12, of Laurium,
participated in The Masters project at the Ramblin' Rose Garden Gallery in Mohawk.
Carol Rose, Ramblin' Rose Garden Gallery owner and
director, helps young Keweenaw Krayons artists Jenny Isaacson, center, and Elizabeth Gundlach clean their brushes during The
Masters program held at the gallery in Mohawk. Now that Keweenaw Krayons, Ramblin' Rose's Budding Artists, is a
nonprofit organization, Rose hopes to obtain funding to expand the gallery and make it a kids' art center for Keweenaw County.
Keweenaw Krayons kids are displaying their own replicas of
famous paintings on the streets of Mohawk for the Rural Arts Conference July 6-9. At
left below, this replica of Pierre Auguste Renoir's "Fruits from the Midi" is the group
effort of Kara Oikarinen, Emily Ketola and Natalie Baroni, with Sarah Koski as teen
leader. Below right is a replica of Pablo Picasso's "Paul, Son of the Artist," painted by Jodi Ketola.
