Keweenaw Arts Alive offers summer concerts, youth programs
MOHAWK --
Keweenaw Arts Alive kicks off its first year of arts events on Tuesday, July 11, in Keweenaw County. Eagle Harbor will host an
introduction-to-opera concert and a childrenís summer program, while a youth watercolor class begins in Mohawk.
"An Evening of Opera
Scenes" -- the first concert of five to be held in Keweenaw County during July and August -- will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the St.
Peters-by-the-Sea Church in Eagle Harbor July 11.
Four more Keweenaw Arts Alive outdoor concerts are scheduled during August:
- Finn
Street will play at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, in Ahmeek (supported by Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center).
- The
Keweenaw Swing Band will entertain at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 7, in Mohawk (supported by Superior National Bank).
- "Jazz by the
Setting Sun" with Real Time will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8, in Eagle River (supported by individuals and businesses of Eagle
River and Eagle Harbor).
- White Water will play at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, in Copper Harbor (supported by the Copper Harbor
Improvement Association).
The concert series is locally sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Power Company (a Wisconsin Public Service Resources
Corp. company) and ABC-TV's WBKP, Channel 5&28.
The Keweenaw County Historical Society will hold the
first of its childrenís summer programs from 10 a.m. to noon on July 11, at the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. The programs for youth ages 7 to 14 will
feature regional history with storytelling and related arts activities. Preregistration is required; each session costs $8.
Four different
programs will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays through July and August beginning with the July 11 "Living at a Lighthouse." Other programs are
titled, "Fishing for a Living," "Copper Miners of the Past" and "Paddle-to-the-Sea." Call (906)289-4930 to obtain

Watercolor artist Clyde Mikkola will teach the first of 16 youth art lessons at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the
Rambliní Rose Garden Gallery Studio in Mohawk. Several artists will offer classes throughout July and August. Most of the one-and-a-half-hour art
classes will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with an occasional Thursday class. Besides watercolor classes, there will be papermaking, stepping
stones, mosaics and various crafts. Pre-registration is required even though there is no charge. Call (906)337-4706 or (906)337-5806 for more
information or registration. Registration for July classes has been filled, but places are still available for August classes. The registration
deadline is July 22.
"The northernmost part of Michigan must be ready for more arts because the response so far to the scheduled
Keweenaw Arts Alive events has been wonderful," said Keweenaw County Arts Coordinator Darlene Basto.
All the events are made possible
with a $7,000 matching grant awarded recently by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Rural Arts Initiative and by an outpouring of
community support. The grant is being matched by community support of $3,500 cash and and $3,500 in-kind donations, for a total value of $14,000.
The grant was obtained by Keweenaw residents and business owners, with the assistance of the Hancock Community Arts Center's Susan Burack, Michigan
Association of Community Arts Agencies' Upper Peninsula/Rural Arts Coordinator.
