Ski Tigers clean up in Ishpeming

HOUGHTON ’Äì The Copper Country Ski Tigers took two top spots on Saturday, Feb. 3, and two on Sunday, Feb. 4, in the Suntrac Nor/Am cross-country ski
race in Ishpeming.

In Sunday's freestyle race, John Olson finished second in the 14-15-year-old division, while Ski Tiger Ryan Tervo won the 12-13-year-old male division by 39 seconds over Superiorland's Jared Cregg. In the 10-11-year-old male division, Jay Woodbeck finished second to Superiorland's Andrew Cregg. Another Ski Tiger, Alan Toczydlowski, was fourth.

In the female divisions on Sunday, Kaye Helminen placed fourth in the 14-15-year-old division; and Ski Tigers took the top three spots in the 10-11-year-old division: Lieschen Klemp was first, Karen Oppliger second, and Rachel Toczydlowski third.

In Saturday's classic race, Olson was second among the 14-15 year-olds, while Tervo won the 12-13-year-old male division by more than two minutes. Alan Toczydlowski was fourth in the 10-11 year-old division. In the female divisions, Helminen was fourth in the 14-15-year-olds, while Oppliger and Rachel Toczydlowski finished first and second among the 10-11 year-olds.

The Ski Tigers group teaches cross-country skiing to Copper Country youth of all ages. The group meets at 2 p.m. every Saturday at Swedetown Trails in Calumet. About 75 young skiers are involved. For more information call Michael or Christine Young at 482-1308.
