Volunteers needed to
plant trees at Swedetown Ski Trails
|
Last March Junior Bear Chase participants braved wind
and snow at the start of their race near the Swedetown Chalet. This weekend Copper Island Ski Club members and other
volunteers will plant trees and shrubs near the chalet to stop
erosion and slow the wind. (Keweenaw Today file photo)

The Copper Island Cross-Country Ski Club invites
volunteers to help plant 3500 trees and
shrubs at the Swedetown Cross-Country Ski Trails in
Calumet from 9 a.m. to
1 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, and from 1 p.m. to 4
or 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 29. Calumet Township
purchased the plants through a Michigan Department
of Natural Resources grant designed to remediate
off-road-vehicle damage. Volunteers need not be club
members to help.
The trees and shrubs will be
planted around the chalet to stop erosion and slow
the wind. The local ROTC group and the students
from Keweenaw Academy will be helping plant the
seedlings.
’ÄúWe are asking as many skiers
as possible to also get involved,’Äù said Jon
Neufeld, club president. ’ÄúTools to bring include
shovels, picks, planting bars, and buckets. An
old pair of scissors or two would also come in
handy. Wear boots and gloves.’Äù
Neufeld said the Keweenaw
Nordic Ski Club will be planting at Maasto Hiihto
from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 5, and from 1
p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 6. They also welcome
volunteer help.
Skiers should also mark October
6, 2001, on their calendars for the big brushing day
at Swedetown, Neufeld added. As in past years, the
AmeriCorps volunteers will be helping with this
project to get the trails ready for the new season.
Maasto will also be planning brushing days.
