Thomas Mottonen
(February 14, 1940 -- July 4, 2001)

Tom Mottonen of Lac La Belle

Thomas ìUncle Tomî Mottonen, 61, a resident of Lac La Belle, passed away July 4, 2001, following an apparent heart attack. 

He was born on February 14, 1940, in Ahmeek, a son of the late Reino and Ellen Mottonen. 

He attended and graduated from the Calumet High School with the class of 1958 and later attended Ford Community College in Detroit. 

In 1961 he moved to Detroit where he was employed at Ford Motor Co. In 1965 he moved back to Laurium where he owned and operated Copper Isle Construction. He was also employed at Mercy Ambulance as an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). 

He was recently hired as Keweenaw County building inspector. 

Uncle Tom was an avid hunter, story teller and joke teller; and he loved his family, friends and grandchildren. Tom will be greatly missed by all who knew him. 

He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. 

On October 15, 1960, he married the former Stella Kumpula in Calumet.

He was preceded in death by: His parents and one sister, Beverly 

Surviving are: 

Wife: Stella 

Daughters: Tammy (Mark) Effinger of Ahmeek
                 Lynn (Andy) Wood of Swedetown 

Sons:         Jon (Mary Kay) Mottonen of Calumet
                 Aric Mottonen and Erin of Ahmeek 

3 grandchildren: Misty, Dustin and Amber 

Uncle: Carl Niemi 

Aunt: Helen Lahti and Matt 

His dog Benny and six other grand dogs. 

Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 9, 2001, at noon in the Erickson-Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet with the Rev. Allen Goodrich to officiate. 

Friends may call on Sunday, July 8, 2001, at the Erickson-Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. 

The Calumet Elks will have a toast at 7 p.m. in the Funeral Home. 

Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
