Kerredge Gallery Exhibition
clay sculpture by Jess Kane
May 8-June 2, 2012
Jess Kane's new work in ceramic attempts to access the part of memory that is neither wholly inherent nor acquired, but exists as an alliance of experience and physiology. This intimacy is translated through a rebus of earthenware forms that challenge scale and surface to be both precious and provocative. Jess studied ceramics at
the University of Michigan, Northern Michigan University and The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. She moved to Helena in 2006 to work at The Archie Bray Foundation. In 2008, Jess was the recipient of an artist grant from The Myrna Loy Foundation for her vegetable oil burning kiln design. She has spent much of the last two years building a home studio in Calumet and growing with her daughter. Join us for an opening reception on Thursday, May 10th from 6 –8 pm.

The Copper Country Community Arts Center was awarded a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs-New Leaders Program. This grant will help support our second annual Book Arts Camp for students in grades 8-12. Students will participate in activities such as book binding, creative writing, zines & illustration, letterpress printing, paper making and block printing from a team of professional artists. See our Spring/Summer
class brochure for details.
The CCCAC would like to thank two contributors to our Summer Arts Camp scholarship fund: Emily
Newhouse and the Calumet Players. If you would like to help a young student attend camp, consider contributing
to our scholarship fund. $50 gives a 1/2 scholarship for one student. Call Cynthia or Bonnie if you’d like to donate.
Thank you to all who donated or supported this fundraiser. Thanks especially to volunteers Anne Patrick, Mary
Loukus, Mary Dixon, Pete Method, Joyce Koskenmaki, and Phyllis Fredendall for your help.

EXTREME BAKE SALE! Call for BAKERS!
The CCCAC will have their huge annual bake sale during the 11th annual Houghton Spring Art & Music Festival to raise money for programs! Help us generate some dough by donating cookies, bars, brownies, granola, tarts, etc. by 5:00pm on Friday, June 8. Please wrap individually or package groups of goodies. Call or e-mail us if you’d like to bake!
Applications for artists’ booths are now available at the Community Arts Center, or downloadable here, for the Houghton Spring Art and Music Festival happening on Saturday, June 9th in downtown Houghton. Application Deadline: May 25, 2012.
Make sure to bring your own bag & have the cashier acknowledge the credit! This is how the program works (from the Keweenaw Co-Op website): “For each full-sized grocery bag that the Co-op doesn't use, because you provided your own bag, you contribute a credit to a community project or organization. A new recipient is selected for a
six month period from Earth Day to October then October to Earth Day. The campaign is the Co-op's way to give back to the community based on shoppers use of their own sustainable shopping bags instead of the use of plastic or paper bags at the cost of the Co-op. The fund builds on credits for each bag saved. At the end of each time period that revenue is awarded as a donation to a local organization or project that meets the selection criteria.” ~www.keweenaw.coop/bring-a-bag.php. Thank you, Keweenaw Co-Op!
paintings by Bethany Stevens
Portage Lake District Library through May
The acrylic paintings by Bethany Stevens are inspired by the artist’s meditation practice. "Mind waves are metaphors for thoughts that distract us from being in the present moment." states the artist. Mind Waves is considered Action Painting under the Abstract Expressionist movement. Her work is influenced by American Abstract Expressionists, French Canadian artists, French Tachisme, (spontaneous brushwork, drips and blobs of paint straight from the tube), and Color Field Theory. Bethany earned her Bachelor of Applied Arts degree
from Central Michigan University in photography and sculpture.
Help us keep the Sales Gallery looking fresh and interesting! If you’re one of the artists we represent, plan to pick up older work and bring in new work by June 15. We would also like to have an updated bio and artists statement about your work on file. Help us represent you more completely!
Copper trees by Buzz Brown, glass pendants and earrings by Sara Piccard, color reduction block prints by Tom
