Three guest Pasty Camists have teamed up to bring this variety of sandy scenes. The first one above is from Kelly Wenburg of Dollar Bay, who didn't say exactly where in the Keweenaw it was taken, but it does appear to be eagle prints. The second is a hoof impression from Tom Baker, park ranger in Calumet (who has a pretty hefty paw himself), a photo taken along the AAA road near Anderson Homestead. Finally, Peter Chiomenti from Maryland spotted the snow angel, er..., I mean 'sand' angel... on the beach below Calumet Waterworks.

Oh, by the way, last night we had blazing Northern Lights again here along Lake Superior. Dan Urbanski emailed this beauty, which we have also added to yesterday's big pictures:

Heavenly

For the camera buffs, this photo was taken with an Olympus E-20, 60 seconds at f 2.0. The effective film speed was ISO 80. I used the camera's noise reduction mode to tame those pesky electrons. The dots are smaller stars, not CCD noise.

Big Buck! Or small hands? Sure its not a moose? But dont think theres any moose in Copper Country?
Anybody know?

By Steve in Illinois on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 09:45 am:

Moose in the Keweenaw? Absolutely! At least a few. However, looks more like an Elk print to me.....

By BinNo'ville on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 10:05 am:

How 'bout a cow?

By Liz Benson, S.E. Idaho on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 10:17 am:

Speaking of cows and elk...special draw for cow elk opened Oct 1 in Idaho. I hear tell that some success will end up in my little freezer. Told them only if it showed up in butcher paper. Two bear attacks in our area on archery hunters. Yearling Cubs involved w/Mama. Our general deer season opens this weekend. It's snowing as I write.

By Karen P, MN on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 10:53 am:

My first thought was moose tracks.

The colours are finally changing in the Twin Cities. Sumacs, early maples and some ash. It seemed like it happened overnight. Maybe it was just that we finally had some glorious sun to spotlight the change!

By Steve, end of the road on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 12:16 pm:

Looks like a Moose to me.

Thanks Dan for saving us from those pesky electrons. I've been bit by one before and boy do they smart :^)

GRRRRRRRR! This has nothing to do with today's photo, but I am VERY upset! I clicked on the Bridge Cam, and it was half way up. I called my son and said A SHIP IS COMING THROUGH! Well... the next frame showed it was actually going DOWN and not UP! So we missed it! That is, however, the first time I've seen it in operation on the Bridge Cam. Maybe next time!

Yep, Tom Bakers picture is most certainly moose tracks. This site www.bcadventure.com/adventure/ wilderness/animals/moose.htm will show a picture of moose tracks. My uncle, a wildlife biologist told me that it looks to be a bull moose. The tracks of a average bull that stands 7 feet, are two toed and 5-10 inches long and 4-6 inches wide.

Since my picture of the two meese/moose a few months back, I have started something because I have seen so many moose on the Pasty Cam recently. Jonathons moose on Isle Royale was by far the best pic I have ever seen.

Those of you in search of moose should keep your eyes open when passing through Michigamme. I saw three moose traveling together there this past weekend. Also, get a copy of Michigan Moose from the DNR and they will show a map of potential moose viewing areas.

By SharonS on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 01:02 pm:

When I went over the bridge yesterday, I was surprised to see it all the way DOWN - first time since May that I know of. Is the shipping season over?

By Lyn on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 01:09 pm:

Here is the correct web address for moose tracks. http://www.bcadventure.com/adventure/wilderness/animals/moose.htm

By Da Joizy shore clamdigger on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 01:17 pm:

Well, there's at least one moose in the Keweenaw. Took my Aunt Tillie for a spin and went down towards Sedar Bay. A moose walked in front of us like it had the green light.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 07:26 pm:

I noticed it was down yesterday, too. When it went down today, it went all the way down, but now it's up a notch again! :)

By Kathy Baker, Calumet Waterworks on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 07:50 pm:

Yes, my husband Tom and I were quite sure of a positive ID on the moose track out on the AAA Road between L'Anse and Marquette. Never saw the moose but the track was HUGE! The photo I took was incorrectly identified as a buck track.

By Arnold Ziffel, Armada MI on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 07:53 pm:

Fair Warning to all Copper Harbor Dwellers: The pasty chomping, Copper Country fanatic from Macomb County is making his seventh annual fall colors tour up there this weekend with his two curious dogs in tow. It's like a kid trying to sleep on Christmas eve...Except for me there's no mystery because a great time is guaranteed! I was going to break the string and try Maine and Vermont for fall colors, but I heard there were all of these east coast people there that would ruin the asthetics and clog the roads so U.S. 41, here I come!

By LIZ, Pinckney, Mi on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 09:21 pm:

I, like Arnold, am off to the U.P. this weekend. In fact leaving in about 6 hours or so. Depends what time I get up. Like to drive I75 in the dark 'cuz there's nothing to see and hit the Big Mac bridge early in the AM. Got my winter coat and gloves packed though that seems absurd as I sit here in shorts and I'm only 10 hours south. Been so warm here it seems like I'm heading up for a summer weekend! Hoping to see some color and get the feel of fall - tired of the summer heat. Give me some cool crisp days and a blazing fire in the stove!

By Mary on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 - 11:14 pm:

Liz,
Make sure you bring your matches......and don't unpack those gloves or winter coat! It's 34° at the Houghton County Airport, as I type this....brrrr!! :)

By Ken from da UP on Thursday, October 3, 2002 - 12:13 am:

It's a little chilly outside tonight here in Cornell, too. 44 deg. but they're calling for a chance of frost by morning. Feels GOOD! Pytavay, where do I find the little degree mark? Is there one on my keyboard, or is it too old?

By Toivo from Toivola on Thursday, October 3, 2002 - 12:53 am:

Ken - you meant to say 44° ?? Wonder how to get the little degree mark ° to appear? Same way you get the smiley face J or the frowny face L in there. Here's a link to some instructions how to format your messages, along with special effects and color.

The instructions will improve your Pastyvision

Yah, dat sand angel one makes me feel all of 'da sand in my shorts, eh!!

By Karen P, MN on Thursday, October 3, 2002 - 08:15 am:

Toivo, thanks for the lesson. Now, can you teach people to use upper case letters at the beginning of their sentences?

By uncle bud/mohawk on Thursday, October 3, 2002 - 10:00 am:

i am really impressed with the wind-talkers

By Mary on Thursday, October 3, 2002 - 10:28 am:

Ken,
Actually the way I inserted the ° symbol was a different than the formating stuff. But my method won't get you the smiley faces or color, so Toivo's info is quite useful to me too! Thanks Toivo!

I just click the start button, go to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then click on Character Map. It'll tell you which keystrokes you need to make lots of different symbols, in email, on messages, letters, notes, anywhere you type! For instance, for the ° symbol, I held down the "Alt" key (next to your space bar) and using the calculator keys on your keyboard, typed 0176 (while holding that Alt key down) and VOILA! Hope this helps! Email me if you have any trouble! J

Well, it is better to leave the things on the world and focus all your attention on God. Please, let try and do the will of thy Lord.

The time is coming when you are going to leave the world, where will you go to? If you are either Muslim or Christian, you really have to do the will of God.

Remember what shall it be the profit of a man that gain the whole world and loss his soul. God loves you all and He wants you to draw closer to Him by now. Please, come and let follow thy Lord either you are muslim or christian.

Just stick hold unto thy Lord and continue praying to Him the way you have choosen or where they born you to. Just try and pray to Him forgiveness.

Muslim and Christian are worshipping a God but in different ways. We Christian believe in Jesus thy Lord son, while the Muslim beleive in Muhammed thy Lord servant.

Please, let we remember thy Lord always.

Thanks.

Yours faithfully,
