Kevin Musser of CopperRange.org sent along today's shoebox memory, with an invitation to dinner at the South Range VFW Hall today (4/14/2) from noon to 4pm. It's the annual spaghetti fund raiser of Painesdale Mine & Shaft, Inc., the non-profit group working to restore the Champion #4 site.

The travelers in the car above are Anton F. Haun and two of his sons, on a road trip to Painesdale from their home in Calumet, somewhere around 1915-1917.

We sure appreciate the daily pics posted here, and these old shoebox memories are very enjoyable! It looks like the old Sarah Sargent Paine Library at the end of the street there, which used to stand next to the high school. Am I right? I check out this pasty.com site every morning with my coffee and "korppu". Happy Spring all!

The photo was taken looking east on Kearsarge St. in Painesdale. You can see the Finnish Temperance Hall, followed by the Opera house and in the distance the Sarah Sargeant Paine Memorial Library, all now just a memory. Stop by today for some good food and fun.

Korppu is cinnamon toast. They sell them in the stores in paper bags.. One brand name is Trenary.
Old timers dunked them in the coffee.

I have never developed a liking for coffee, but like my Korppu (Trenary Toast is the best!) dunked in hot cocoa. Yummmmmm!
