It's a sunny afternoon in Eagle River, Alaska, where the 2002 National Championship Women's Hockey tournament is under way. The Michigan Tech Husky ladies got the luck of the draw, in their first matchup facing last year's returning champion Chesapeake Bay Lightning. After a brilliant first period the Huskies led 1-0, but the Lightning battled back to a solid lead by the final buzzer. The Tech team hopes to get their revenge by earning the right to face the Maryland skaters again in the Championship matchup on Sunday.

The goalee in the shot above is our daughter Becky Howard, who grew up in Eagle River, Michigan. My wife Edie and I came along with the team, combining the trip as an early 30th anniversary celebration, which we'll mark later this year. We will bring you reports of the team's progress while we're here, and maybe some shots of the beautiful Anchorage area - which a lot of MTU alumni call home.

Hi, Charlie and group:

I'll join you at tomorrow's game to cheer for the Huskies. Checked out the Tesoro Arena yesterday and watched some of the Senior A Division shooting slap shots - they looked pretty good. I think they were from the Boston area.
