Last time we saw the lift bridge on the Pasty Cam was with a shoebox memory, showing the old swing bridge side by side with the new one during its construction.

Rick Whitman had a steady hand while he snapped a low-light shot of this landmark, taken while he was here visiting his parents.

Thanks to all the occasional Pasty Camists who send us your scenes from anywhere in the U.P.

I love that bridge because I know when I cross it I will be back in "God's Country"! It was really neat to see the shoe box photo of the building of the lift bridge. I can't wait to get back to the Keweenaw again next summer!

When we come to the U.P.,we like to stay at the Ramada Inn. That way we can see the bridge work. The lake is always nice too, hay!!

Once again, I'm at sea and a long way from the Copper Country. My house is hiding in the dark, behind the bridge there, but I know I'm looking at home, back at my lovely wife and daughter.
God bless all of you for bringing me these images when I need them most.

So nice to see my hometown bridge..a sight so often seen before..But so far away right now!
Thanks for the pic...although I am getting homesick looking at this..
I think I am gonna set it as my wallpaper right now!

Glad the image has brough fond memories
and pleasure to some of the folks visiting
pasty.com. After enjoying so many of the
wonderful images on this site I wanted to
contribute something.

Also ended up being a nice birthday present
as Nov 16 was my birthday, thanks.

On the technical side, shot was 5 seconds, f

What is the date, approx of the Shoebox picture? When was the new bridge built?

By Mark, Chicago, where we got bridges, too on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 10:11 am:

Alice, check out this article www.copperrange.org/spans.htm for a good history about the bridges across Portage Lake. The work on the existing bridge was completed in 1959 and dedicated in June 1960. So I'd guess the picture is winter '59/'60.

This photo reminds me of the laskeshore during the fourth of July and Bridgefest. Houghton-Hancock is a unique and beautiful location. This picture made me feel at home even though I'm hundreds of miles away.
