The railings on this bridge used to look like the lower left of the photo, with the X of the logs... (and some big holes for little ones to slip through). In addition to being safer, the new cedar slats are attractive as well. The old campground is being spruced up for the season ahead.

See the white building on the other side of the bridge? That's the "Tabernacle", which was seen inside just over a year ago on the Pasty Cam. You may recall the public meetings on the Mount Bohemia issue.

The bridge really looks different from what it did with the X railings. It is very pretty and alot safer. It just seems weird to see it look different than it did for years. I went to Gitche
Gummee for many a summers and my kids did up until last summer. We have now moved out to Grand Canyon, AZ, so this summer they will not be able to go. They said they are going to really miss it.

Great pictures of Camp Gitche Gumee. Hope to see some this summer when bible camps are going on.

THE BRIDGE TO THE TABERNACLE LOOKS GREAT! BRINGS BACK WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF YOUNG AND OLD GOING TO CHAPEL, LAUGHING, AND LONG TALKS ON THIS SPOT. MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS GITCHE GUMEE AND THE LIGHT IT IS, TO THE COPPER COUNTRY, AND TO WE "TROLLS" WHO COME NORTH TO IT'S GATES. HI CHARLIE AND ALL IN EAGLE RIVER.......... :)

How long has Gitchee Gumee been there? I never visited it but remember walking past it many times when visiting my grandparents in Eagle River years ago.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - 11:56 pm:

Betty -

Gitche Gumee was built in 1930, 71 years ago. I've been a camper there for half of that time, first as a teen camper in 1965, then moving here to Eagle River, where we have lived year-round since 1988. My wife Edie is the houskeeper there through each summer, and I used to be the youth camp program director, before joining Still Waters in 1994. A year later Still Waters went on the web and in '96 became "pasty.com". Over the years we have featured many shots with the campers at Gitche Gumee, here is one of my favorites:

A splash in the U.P.

Several hundred regular visitors to the Pasty Cam are also summer campers at Gitch Gumee, such as Fred and Gay Klein who posted the note just before yours, Betty. One of these days we really should publish a tour of the camp and it's history.

We walked across that bridge many times going to the evening service during the summer camps and retreats.Heard some of the greatest speakers at Gitche Gumee.Dr.Les Ollila,Tom Harmon, Otto Koning, Rachael Metzler, etc.
First time at camp was around 1956-57 Spent a week there as a youngster 6-7 years old.Childhood memory never forgotten.

Does Camp Gitche Gumee have a website yet?

By Charlie H., Eagle River on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 11:48 am:

Not yet, Amy, but we'll try to get something going this summer. Several years ago, before we even had the Pasty Cam, there was a spoof page with several of the spring workers at Gitche Gumee. So pictures of the Camp actually pre-date the Pasty Cam!

It is going to be more difficult for a youngster to walk that railing now. How could you be so cruel! :)

I always enjoy seeing pictures of Gitche Gumee. It brings back many wonderful memories. Pastor Hart worked for Rural Bible Missions when my dad,as a high schooler, first met him. Then he was a camper some time in the '40's. Our youth group attended camp there in the late '60's along with another church whose youth director was a teacher by the name of Mel Jones. So you see my ties to Gitche Gumee and its family goes back a number of years. My family has been back a couple of different times since and still talk of returning. It's kind of like a home away from home. Keep the pictures coming and hope to see a web site soon. Keep up the good work.
