Let the record show the first shipping traffic of the season spotted by yours truly occurred at 4:54am, March 23, 2001. Like an old friend, the lights of a freighter appeared before dawn off the coast toward Isle Royale.

Also, Steve Brimm emailed me a few frosty pine needles in the dark. Luckily they didn't melt in my modem.

Have you ever seen the website which tracks shipping on the Great Lakes in real-time? It gives locations and names... and I can't seem to find the bookmark for the site. Any ideas?

I think this photo is absolutely awesome, even better than the diamond the day before, which blew me away. Thank you, Steve and Dan, for such photographic artistry.

Steve,
Could you share with us how you made this beautiful photograph? I have never seen snowflakes or frost such as this!

By susan hooker on Friday, March 23, 2001 - 12:16 pm:

That is without a doubt one of the coolest pictures I've ever seen. It's my new wallpaper.

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Friday, March 23, 2001 - 12:23 pm:

I agree, Chris K, Chicago. I have been flipping back and forth trying to decide which one to set as wallpaper. Absolutely wonderful pictures!

If I captured that picture I would put my camera away forever and call it a job well done. Indidvidual snowflakes?? WOW!!!

This is truly an amazing picture! I am envious of your great talent. Anybody can take a picture, but you turn it into an art! WOW is just not enough! Great job, be proud, and give thanks for your talent! We sure do!

That pic of the snowflakes is, by far, one of the best pics I have seen with a macro lens! Good job!!
