It was a beautiful morning over the Porcupine Mountains today, with vibrant
sunshine illuminating the snow laden treetops. Lake effect snow clouds
linger on the horizon. Winter is OK after all.

As the webmaster at Pasty Central, I am often asked if the U.P. photos we present are available as prints or posters which can be displayed in your home. As a frequent contributor to the Pasty Cam, many of Dan Urbanski's pictures are available through his QuietlyWild website.

We're grateful to all the amateur and professional photographers who keep the Pasty Cam fresh and interesting every day. I especially appreciate Dan's hard work and skill in sharing this region's beauty with us.

Charlie,

I look at these pictures every morning. They are beautiful. We live in Tennessee and have a cottage at Gratiot Lake. This morning they have a dusting of snow here and all of the schools are closed.

What a gorgeous scene. My happy pill for the day is seeing these fantastic shots!
I remember the very first time I visited Lake of the Clouds.....that's what it was....nothing but clouds!

While I was at MTU in the 70's I was told that "Lake of the Clouds" was renamed, that it was originally "Mud Lake". Was I fooled by an upperclassman or is there any truth to that story?

I enjoy the pictures - every day a new picture brings back another memory from the years I spent in the Copper Country!

By Dan U, Silver City, MI on Saturday, January 20, 2001 - 10:40 pm:

My guess for the cracks in the ice is pressure from high winds. The photo was taken following an early season ice storm, and the ice on Lake Of The Clouds was fairly thin.

L of Clouds was originally called Carp Lake, and Mirror Lake in the Porkies was Little Carp Lake. No carp in either, the names are a derivative of French for escarpment or cliff. Tourism entities renamed the Lakes back in the 30's or 40's.
