Boy, the U.P. has really received a lot of attention lately. Last month Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had a consolation prize of U.P. pasties when his Lakers fell to the Pistons... and this week the President of the United States pops by for a visit. He wasn't in Marquette long, as there was another stop scheduled in Duluth last evening. Our thanks to Andy Larsen for overnighting a shot of the historic occasion. It has been almost a century since a chief executive stopped by.

Whatever your political persuasion, it is certainly out of the ordinary for a President to visit this remote part of the country. We'd like to think he was actually in search of a good pasty, and just missed the Copper Country by a few miles :o)

In keeping with the casual conversation of the daily Pasty Cam, we ask that comments on this page be of a non-partisan nature. However, if you are inclined to express a strong opinion one way or the other about the November election, we have set up two additional pages for today's discussion: thumbs up and thumbs down. Just remember, we can disagree without being disagreeable.

And to presidents in the years ahead, we leave an open invitation from the U.P. - Don't stay away so long next time.

Not even 7AM and it is 60°in my part of Houghton County. Not a cloud in the sky. Looks like a bathing suit and big lake on my schedule today!

This site never ceases to amaze me. One day I tune in and the subject is a duck, and the next day it's the President of the United States. You guys have way too much fun.

Wether we agree with him or now it is great that we get to see a sitting president visit the U.P. every 96 years.

What another beautiful day! It finally appears summer has arrived. The storms they predicted for yesterday afternoon missed us and it turned out to be the perfect day for the county fair!

Don't know the temp but it is warm here in Abilene....probably already 70's with prediction for 90's to 100. Sunny, hot, windy...welcome to West Texas:)

Check out the Guest Gallery. There are hundreds, probably thousands of beautiful scenery pictures. I am not a Bush fan myself, but his visit was a historical occurrence for the U.P.

It is an honor for the Yoopers to have the President stop up for a visit....regardless of political affiliation. It is nice to see that Charlie and the gang still have RESPECT for our President. I often wonder what will become of our younger generations when simple respect is continually tossed out the window like yesterdays trash.

Just give G-dub a couple of pasties and a beer eh!

Charlie, I agree with you that President Bush missed the best part by a few miles. I love and miss the UP, but I left my heart in the Copper Country.

Down here in troll HQ I've been in traffic re-routed for 2 presidential motorcades(Cinton & Bush)...and I must say it's awe inspiring each time! Those things are something to see speeding down the freeway with the lights, antennas & flags.
I swear I could see Bubba through the windows in his Suburban! Bush was in that bus so you couldn't see anything.
Seems like we should have stopped our cars and saluted or something, instead of just driving along and gawking!

Wasn't Al Gore at NMU back as VP? I seem to recall actually being there and staring in aw at the Secret Service running around with their earpieces. :)

I thought it was interesting to hear one of the major networks describe Upper Michigan in their sound bite as "a rural, socially conservative area of Michigan". That's it...? Sounds like we need to send them some brochures and some pasties, etc., eh?

When Jesse Jackson was here in February, I went because he is an American icon whether we admit it or not. He has a presence that eminates. My Nevada family attended a Bush function in Reno. They said the same thing....an eminating presence. If a national figure appears in my town, whether Dem or Rep, I will go. Then I'll include my written experience in the family journal. My nieces and nephews call me their Auntie from the Attic for a reason.

For those of you who are looking for the "natural"...what could be more natural than a man finding the best place in the USA...the UP? I say more power to him and anyone else who has enough sense to visit for whatever reason. I miss the UP very much and am glad to see it is important to even the most powerful and celebrated persons. God Bless the UP!!

People in Los Angeles learned yesterday that there is an UPPER PENINSULA in Michigan. Lots of free advertising on TV and radio.

It is great to think about AirForce One tilting its wings
and landing on the tarmac near the Big Sea Water in the
land of Hiawatha ;This in a beautiful place that just a
decade or so ago was literally on the front line of the Cold
War for so many years. The visit of an American President is
a moment to remember and celebrate in any era,as
Americans, and it is a fitting tribute to remember the men
of the Armed Forces who served in Marquette and
moreover to remember the many sons and daughters of the
Upper Penninsula who are now serving the current
Commander and Chief without regard to party affiliation
and in time of peril with exceptional pride, courage and
loyalty to the American system.
Better yet, that this is a visit concerning an election to
happen this fall. What else could so fittingly reminds a
person, whoever and whereever , of their importance as a
decision maker in this country's destiny. America isn't
perfect, we are allowed to say that, but it isn't a lie either. If
any of us got everything that we wanted out of it everyday,
it wouldn't be the great place that it is for everyone else.
A great day for a great place. Wish I had been there
and I still wish the Gipper had made it to Laurium. Wouldn't
that have been a great sight to remember?

I agree! It was wise to "take it outside" (an excellant way to put it I might add) Applause goes out to Charlie to at least keep the political comments seperate from the main mesage board.

Kudos to Charlie. Perfect idea. To Tom in Colorado my heart is also back in the good ole Copper Country. Heading there real soon.

It looks like a BEAUTIFUL day in the UP, but when I checked the beach forecasts on CNN, the water temp. in Lake Superior ranges from 40* to 48*. Guess I shouldn't be surprised with the cold spring and summer you've been having. Sure would like to be on one of those beaches.

I went to the airport to see the President come in. Whether I'm a supporter of Prsident Bush or not, it was great to see Air Force One with the President of the United States on board touch down at K.I. The people there saw his motorcade circle out on the runway awaiting the arrival. The jet parked behind a line of heavy equipment inside a fence to use as a barrier so it was had to see the jet once it had parked. But we did see President Bush come out & wave to the people. He then passed by waving to the people as he left. I was able to go into a hanger where all of the SUV'S and the two limos were parked & my husband & I spoke to one of the secret servicemen. We were able to have our pictures taken beside the limos. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience and one I will never forget. And it'll be special for my grandchildren when they see the pictures.

As part of the next generation (I'm 26)...believe it or not, we do have respect for many things and we DO NOT "toss it out the window." It seems that there are many others that need to learn respect...not just the younger generations.

The current and returning President Bush visiting our area is a big deal to us here and we enjoyed having him and welcome him back to "God's country". That may not be big news in Al Gore land but we appreciate it, "boring" as you may feel it is. Have a great one yourself, and by the way we are enjoying a heat wave of mid 70's so welcome up.

I have to add my 2 cents and stand up with Jennifer from WI. I also am the 'next' generation (24) and i feel very strongly that it's not that we don't have respect, I think we are over shadowed by a minority of people who prject a bad impression.

I'm very proud of the fact that at my age I have been a professinal working in the buisness world and taking on responsobilities for myself, my family and the business I support (I'm in IT with 200 + users) for many years now. I think there are more people of our age like me, you just don't hear about them is all, and that in fact is to bad.

Ahh the antipodean political banter is pertinacious indeed. When moral clarity, strong resolve and enduring pilotage are de riguer, George W Bush is the candidate to shepherd this blessed nation. I concur with the locution "Strong and steady leadership" as this man's distinction.

I wasn't saying our younger generations don't have respect...what I meant is my generation....Baby Boomers....are teaching our younger generations to dis-respect in many cases. We are today's media...We are today's entertainment moguls....We are today's parents...WE..the Baby Boomers need to teach by example and quit running our own leaders and our own great country into the ground every chance we get. We are teaching our younger generations that respect means nothing....however...my own children have great respect for our leaders and I am sure there are tons more of the young people of today who are very respectful...lets keep it that way and lift up our leaders and our country rather than tear them down.

Do you think that the UP of Michigan is going to carry Mr. Bush--926 votes seperated the last election in the UP--Had it not been for the 'CHADS' in Florida, would you still be singing the blues if a Democratic President would have been visiting your so called "Gods Country". Who declared the UP to be Gods Country??? The same yooper that wanted the UP to be the new state a few years back???...Oh well, born in the UP, but one of the happiest to be away.....

Partime yooper....AS a 'Baby Boomer' I don't think you have the right to generalize all of us 'baby boomers' the way you did. MAYBE you are doing all of those things that you mention in your statement, but it is not fair to say that all of us are doing what you say. If you want to admit to your failing to teach the younger generation, I applaud you, but not all of us have failed to teach our children proper values and set proper examples for them to look up to.

Sorry to all sides here...My kids and thier friends that I have contact with are taught by example (mine) to respect our leaders and our country. If I had let them watch MTV and the like as they were growing up...well....I might have a different set of kids on my hands now. I am glad to hear there are many Baby boomers and many X,Y,Z generation people who are "For" respecting our leaders. Thanks for letting me know I am not the only one out there who is disgusted by the way a "few" act. Sorry again to have raised the "hairs" on some of us. By the way, I will be "up north" in the U.P. Friday night thru all the next week. I get one snowy TV station at my place and NO newspaper and no internet. I can't wait to begin a long, quiet vacation in "GODS COUNTRY" where I can experience the beauty right up close and personal. Have a great day, night, and all of next week....I will let it go now.

Does anyone remember when President Kekkonen of Finland landed at Houghton Co Airport?
I think it was about 1972.
The plane was the small {707??} Back up to Air Force 2 the Vice presidents plane if I remember .It was considered a state visit because he flew to D.C. after Houghton.His own plane was to large to fly into Houghton I think.Off now too see the President here in Green Bay later today.

Speaking of pleasantries.....Hasn't today's weather been absolutely wonderful here in the Keweenaw?

I have to say, since I logged off this morning and reading what's been said today....I'm mentally exhausted. So much for the thumbs up/down pages. President Bush stopped here in Fond du Lac this afternoon and although most of the general public did not get to see him in person, his caravan of vehicles did manage to catch a large part of the public eye while traveling down Main Street. Both sides of the street were lined with supports, protesters and those like myself who simply felt proud to be an American and able to stand with my children and see our President (dem or rep)pass through our town. (caught a glimps of him through his bus window) I'm 30 years old and this is my first presidential experience. I can't say it will ever happen again. It was a thrill to see and I hope my children will have the opportunity once again to see a President and stand proud and be thankfull for the freedom and liberty they have. To me, it's not about support or not, right or wrong, blame or not to blame....it's about respect. I intend to teach my two children the same.

Before I was an adult I would have never thought that the
governments (FSCL) of this great country would become such a necessary, everyday time consuming grant giving intrusive regulatory tax boggling
entertaining bunch of full health care covered
Americans consuming a large percent of the
national GDP. Let's go back to 1950 and start over.

Hi to the Troll In Eagle Harbor! Very pleasant weather here also. We just picked our car up from the bump shop. One of those cute bambi type projectiles just had to be on the other side of the road right now. Lost her life trying and cost my insurance company $2800! I remember in 1947 when my grandfather showed me the first deer track I had ever saw on our farm. Now they are so thick that you can't drive a mile or so without seeing them. Turkeys are really becoming a very common sight also.

P.S. While at the bump shop I met a lady who was sitting in her car at a coner and two deer ran into her!!! Hit and run!!

On to a different subject. While looking at http://www.c21-nca.com/newcommercial.aspx it looks like The Library is for sale.

Interesting things to read here today.I belive that was not the new Air Force One you saw up there.Dubya was here in Oak Ridge TN. on monday checking out all the Weapons Of Mass Destruction we have stored there that we took away from Libya,remember Kadafee?The World is a better place without him and Sadam in power of any country!But anyway,Air Force One got held up here for two days because of something wrong with a flap,and Dubya had to leave here in the smaller 747.It was great to see on ABC World News with Peter Jennings showing where Marquette was in Michigan's U.P. and saying people call it God's Country yesterday.I'am new here to TN. have been waiting to live here for 15 years.I love it here.This state of Tennessee is going to be a leader in many ways,not only in Health Care.ALGORE did not win his home state TN.I can't see John F ing Kerry doing it either.What's not in the mainstream news is all of Kerry's C.O.'s from Vietnam say he would not make a good leader.

I think its wonderful that the sitting president
visited the UP! I sure do miss the UP and cannot wait to get back up there. Its supposed to be over 100f here in the Dallas area, just too hot to do anything outside. My family and I will be going through the western UP on our way to Marquette. Can any of you Yoopers recommend a campground in the west UP to stay for 2-3 nights on our way to MQT? We were thinking about the Porkies (state park) but havent ever stayed there.
I want to introduce my wife to the balmy feel of Lake Superior too. :-) Take care all.
