Anybody who watches the news on TV6, knows who this fellow is, it's Mike Ludlum. Sherry Saarinen captured him covering the Great Chain Drive Race during BridgeFest 2004. Mike is one of those Yooper reporters, who takes his job seriously. He's quite the character also. I remember back when the Lake Linden-Hubbell Football team won the 1997 State Championship. Mike was invited to speak at the Football Banquet honoring the team. When he was introduced, out he came with his trombone in hand, playing the School Song, Making Glory for Lake Linden! Then he proceeded to give a speech, just about in tears (which may have been part of the act), relating the experience as a reporter following the Lakes throughout that special year!

Can you smell those pasties baking yet? There's only 5 days left on the countdown to Pasty Fest 2004, as Copper Country Homecoming week continues.

Top of the morning!
First Post
Anyone out there feel the llinois earthquake last night? I heard it was a 4.5 and really shook the Milwaukee residents.
Rumble-free in the UP.

By Skylar in Wi on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 06:39 am:

Good morning all. Later, Skylar.

By Donna on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 06:55 am:

What a grand sunrise down here in Baraga, over Keweenaw Bay!! Lots of pink, purple, etc...just sizzling!

Good Morning all!

By not shakey in Chicago on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 07:29 am:

The epicenter for the Illinois quake was in Ottawa, about 80 miles from Chicago. An all night gas station stated that some good fell off the shelf, but that was about it.

The only way I knew about it was from yesterday morning's news.

By Phyllis M, Rockford, IL on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 07:34 am:

I slept through the whole thing last night and never had a clue that it happened. According to an expert from U of W - Madison this occured due to a glacial rift. Any other comments?

By Roudy Mi on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 07:39 am:

Let's put 'good' back on the shelf and hope 'evil' falls off next time.

By now shakey in Chicago on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 07:52 am:

Shakey update

Today's Chicago Tribume states that the center was in Prairie Center, Illinois, no longer Ottawa. Exelon Nuclear's press release said no damage to their three area reactors. How could you not believe a press release? New subject, how rare is a squirrel with three eyes?

This quake happened Monday morning 1:10 am, not today, Tuesday. The USGS is reported to have an earthquake web site.

By CheeseHead Bob on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 08:10 am:

Here's a link or two to more info about the quake. I spept through it in Kenosha, WI, but a friend in Racine was awake and got shaken up by it (no damage).

Good Morning from the Central valley.
As they say out here in Earthquake land "Surf the earth." Hope everyone is OK!

By Down State Dave on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 08:54 am:

Quakes are a real novelty to us "mid-westerners" but when I spent some time in Japan a few years ago it was not unusual to be wakened in the middle of the night by your bed hopping across the room. The locals would say this was caused by "a slight tremor"!

By Roudy Mi on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 09:22 am:

Ahhh the 'locals'. There's color around the world. Thanks Dave

By Mary, IL on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 09:48 am:

Hi All, We are in Naperville,Il and didn't feel a thing. Naperville is North and a little East of where the Quake happened. Not a shake or shudder here. Looking forward to being in the U.P. for the Lake Linden Hubbell High School all school reunion this coming weekend. Happy Fourth of July to everyone.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 10:32 am:

Who's coming to Pasty Fest? Roudy? Dave,Laurium? Wheatman? TAKA?! Roudy, you should have a line of greeting cards, because you make me LOL! I'm leaving from the Flint area (Genesee) at 5:30 Saturday morning for Aura and I'll be enjoying those beautiful sunrises and sunsets over Keweenaw Bay, Donna!

By Earth shakes in the East sometimes, too on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 10:45 am:

So much always going on here. Now, earthquakes! Mother Earth has her own plans and and doesn't want anyone to take it personally. She gives us those small warnings, tho, so we don't stack our "good" too high on the shelf! That is if we heed those warnings.

I'll buy Roudy's greeting cards! Where can I get them? ;)

By Dave, Laurium on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 11:00 am:

I'll be at PastyFest....definitely not going to pass up a freebie pasty....I may bring a disguise along and go thru the line twice...:>) OOPS!! Secret's out....oh well!

By maijaMI on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 11:09 am:

Marsha: I second your thought about wishing Taka would be at pasty fest. As he is in Japan, I don't think he will be, but it would be great if he were. What wonderful pictures he shared with us! Check out his new photos at CUTOnion.com.

By AJ-Keweenaw on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 11:54 am:

Just wondering how much the pasties are going to be at Pasty Fest if we're not one of the 1st 400 to receive free pasties?

By Organized Chaos.. on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 11:58 am:

Please join us for a benefit for 'The White House' on July 6th at the Armory in Calumet. 6 - midnight, 3 bucks at the door. Lots of great local entertainment, food, refreshments and more.

By Brad of Canton on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 11:59 am:

Brad of Canton will be there.
We leave Saturday am. Back to work Tuesday am.
Can't wait to meet all of you's.

By Toivo from Toivola on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 12:17 pm:

Pasty Central pasties will be $2.50/each or 2 for $5 bucks. Such a deal.

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 12:44 pm:

Good morning from warm and sunny San Jose.
Kevin, Lodi... "Surf the earth"... that's funny! I've never heard that before.
How much do pastys usually cost? 2.50 each sounds awfully inexpensive!

By Roudy Mi on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 01:05 pm:

Toivo would gladly raise the price for you Audrey. What would you like to pay $5 ?? $10 ?? Be sure to let him know who you are.

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 01:08 pm:

Funny, Roudy! Actually, we'll be up there late Aug/early Sept, so starting to plan our trip and trying to figure out the best place to try our pasty for the very first time. Didn't realize they were so cheap!! (and so disappointed that we can't be there for the PastyFest this wknd)

By Dave, Laurium on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 01:35 pm:

fore FFFFOOOORRRREEEE!!!!

By Hungry Yooper on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 02:31 pm:

To Audrey Cal. The average price for a pasty is about $2.50 to $3.50 around the UP. It would probably br a lot higher out there in California. Maybe about $5 or $6 bucks? Who cares, they are well worth it. Making me hungry.

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 02:41 pm:

I am so looking forward to trying them! 2 months to go! And so reasonably priced (from where I sit).

By burp, said the earth on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 02:44 pm:

Several years ago there was a small earthquake rumbling through the "island". My sister thought her log pile had fallen! Pretty soon she saw the neighbor's turning on their lights (this was in the wee smalls) and realized that it was a quake. I know she called some department at Tech (the source of book learnin' as opposed to the great education one gets on pasty.com) and sure 'nuf they said it was about a 3 or 4 on the ricter.
I remember one year the Tech winter carnival had an ice sculpture named "the Keweenaw Fault".

By SCOTT M on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 03:13 pm:

HI EVERYONE! HOPE SUMMER IS THERE NOW. IM LOOKING FOR RUSTIC,BACKWOODS CAMPGROUND IN THE AREA. ELECTICITY OR WATER IS NOT NEEDED. ON OR NEAR LAKE SUPERIOR. PLEASE REPLY BY JUL 4TH. THANK YOU

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 03:18 pm:

We rock and roll with the earthquakes here in San Jose, and some of them have really scared me. I was wondering, with all the shafts tunneling underground in the U.P., have you ever had an earthquake their with any cave-ins?

By valentine from shorewood on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 03:22 pm:

Mid-west earthquake. Felt it in Shorewood, Illinois - about 50 miles s.w. of Chicago. Shook the heck out of the bed for about 10 seconds. Imagine feeling the concussion from an explosion - that is kinda what it felt like. I remember another one in the 70's and that one they said had something to do with excessive levels of ground water. Been having a very wet spring - wonder if that had anything to do with it?

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 03:23 pm:

To Audrey, San Jose: Believe me, you will think you died and went to heaven at your first bite of a pasty.

By Mr. Bill on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 03:24 pm:

Audry, San Jose, CA

The pasties from Pasty Central are the best that I've every eaten on the Keweenaw. Order them by tomorrow, (before they close for vacation)and by the time you come in August, you'll be in a position to compare for yourself, first hand!

disclaimer - I am not a stockholder nor hold any vested interested in Pasty Central.

By Joe Finn, Rhinelander, Wi on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 04:05 pm:

Bthecute1:
Mining cannot cause earth quakes. But, what they can cause is a subsidence. This means when the mining activity gets to close to the surface, sooner or later there is a surface cave in. By by house, road etc. The most spectacular was a salt mine underneath a lake in Louisiana. When it broke through to the mining tunnel, the lake was sucked into the mine. Boats, barges, etc. went down the whiripool. No loss of life. Amazing! I saw the video tape. Amazing!

By Al, SoCal on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 04:15 pm:

Bthecute1, I remember ground/house shaking in Copper City as a kid from "airblasts" in the mines. Something about air trapped in the rock formations being compressed and just exploding.

By Greta, hanging about 5, Milw on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 05:42 pm:

Got a little "shook up" in Milwaukee but lasted only 3-4 seconds and freaked my cats out. I guess different areas felt it because of the way the bedrock plates conduct the "waves". ouldn't "surf" too much earth here - just a ripple.

By Joe Dase MTU Mining Engineer on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 06:29 pm:

Al- an Air blast is really a rock burst, the rocks explode from high stress in the ground, especially when they are exposed to air and can deform, the term "Air blast" refers to the air displaced by the rock burst and is sent traveling down the drift, sometimes at speeds over 100 mph.

By Steve, Warrenville, Il. on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 06:45 pm:

Scott M: For rustic camping, try the Porcupine Mtns, although they are a little west of the Keweenaw. Mary, Naperville,Il: I didn't feel the quake either in Warrenville. Wish I could make it up this weekend for a carbolicious pasty, but I am headed for Mountaineer country.

By ert, GA on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 06:48 pm:

Yay! I finally caught a boat on BridgeCam! What a nice day and a beautiful place to be out on one's boat!

By REMEMBER WHEN on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 06:51 pm:

Wasn't there an actual earthquake in calumet-Laurium about 1910 or so?

By camwatcher on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 06:52 pm:

Back in the 1960's I recall hearing of caving ground in Negaunee and several streets being closed due to some kind of collapse from mining. Not so sure what the cause was. Anyone know what ever happened there?

By H from Oklahoma on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 06:55 pm:

Kinda short notice, but what about a room for this coming weekend or are they probably all gone by now? Calumet or Hancock or close by. Doesn't really matter.

By camwatcher on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 06:56 pm:

The Calumet earthquake of 1905 is discussed here. http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/states/michigan/michigan_history.html
I never knew this before. The things you learn on pastycam!

looking fwd to being in Ontonagon this weekend for the festivities...

By camwatcher on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 07:12 pm:

I've been wondering about that guy up on the sign post. If he were my son, I would tell that young man to get right down from there before he breaks his neck !

By Tera, MN on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 07:41 pm:

Hey, does anyone know if the fireworks in Copper Harbor this year are on Saturday or Sunday this year???

By Joe Dase MTU Mining Engineer on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 07:59 pm:

camwatcher- What happened was the caving ground generated by the Mather B iron mine came to surface in a residential area. The mine was a Block Caving mine, where you let the ground you are trying to mine collapse into the mine workings and draw off of the constant inflow of rubble basically, this creates a large viod in the ground and eventually it collapses to the surface, CCI had to move several homes due to this, its very dangerous to enter the area now, but its kinda errie to walk down streets with trees growing through them and cut off street lights.

By Patt, Shiawassee County on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 08:14 pm:

I too am looking for hotel ideas for Friday night. Plan on leaving after work Friday and drive to the bridge or there-abouts and do the rest of the trip early Saturday morning. At the ripe old age of 52, driving alone (not counting the pooch) is just too tiring after a full day at the office. Worse case scenario, I may just crash at one of the rest areas. Any suggestions would certainly be appreciated. I am all set for Sat & Sun night as I am staying with my TECHIE son.

By try the arcadian acres on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 08:29 pm:

try keweenaw.org they should have a list of places to check for lodging.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 08:54 pm:

The reason for my question of earthquakes and cave-ins, is because as little kids we would hear the noise or rumble when the men were blasting below ground, and pretend the house was haunted.

By tc, mich on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 09:50 pm:

That Louisianna subsidence was caused by an oil well drilling down through the lake bottom looking for oil sitting on top of a great lens of salt. The drill went too deep, punctured the mine, and the miners scrambled out ahead of the rising waters. The entire lake drained into the mine, leaving many boats stranded in the mud and causing a Mercedes dealership to cllapse into the lake.

Did I spell Louisianna right? Eh, who cares?

By Joe Finn, Rhinelander, Wi on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 10:15 pm:

tc:
That is what the mining company said. The Oil company of course disagreed. Lots of law suits, I do not know if it was ever resolved.

By another yooper on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 10:15 pm:

I think it's Louisiana, but I'm not sure either.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 10:19 pm:

To Joe Finn, Rhinelander, Wi: Please forgive my ignorance, but you say it causes a surface subsidence at some point. Why not way down below at 10,000. Are the tunnels so well designed and shored(sp?) up or does water fill the tunnels to keep them from caving in. On the other hand water will cause decay of any timbers down there, thus a cave in. (Sometimes a woman's mind can be dangerous

To Al, SoCal: I do not know about air trapped in rock formation causing air blasts, rocks compressed or otherwise. But if the rock compresses...thus a cave in? I just know that it scared us to death when the men would set those charges of dynamite. Yes, our house moved, and vibrated, all it needed was a puff of smoke out of the chimney, and a slam on the keys of a pipe organ.

By Patt, Shiawassee County on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 10:39 pm:

Thanks to whoever suggested Arcadian Acres but what I am looking for is something around St Ignance or Mackinaw City as a half way stop/sleepover in the trip. Once in the Keewenaw on Saturday morn, I will be staying at my son's off campus home in Houghton.

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 12:32 am:

I remember air blasts when I was a kid living in Paavola. I thought it happened when the overhead rock caved in and compressed the air in the shaft. I know they were very loud, and shook the house, and rattled the windows.

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 12:37 am:

I also remember pasties were .50 a piece. 'Course that was a lot longer ago than I want to remember. :>) They're $2.80 now in Escanaba, at Dobber's. Had one the other day and it was very good!

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 02:54 am:

Now that I think of it, our house moved so much it started on Mine Street, and ended up on Calumet Avenue, or was that the other way around? With all that air blasting and dynamite exploding I don't know what's between my ears! :)

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 05:19 am:

The Pasty Fest pasties mentioned above are the "picnic size", a little smaller than regular (9 oz vs. 14 oz). Toivo likes to say they are easier to hold, and have less carbs (if you do the math).

A heated picnic pasty for $2.50 is basically at cost. The regular size (frozen) will be available for $3 each to carry out. When we send pasties across the country, on average the packing and shipping more than doubles the cost.

If you're in the Copper Country on Sunday, July 4, hope to see you in Agassiz Park in Calumet sometime between 11am and 4pm for Pasty Fest 2004.

By Kevin K. Lodi, CA. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 07:53 am:

Even at more then double the cost. It's still well worth it to have a delicious U.P. pasty delivered to your door. It's getting about time to order more.

By SDC, Ferndale, MI on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 12:03 pm:

I remember picnics at McClains park eating Grandma's homemade pasties and drinking ice cold bottles of pop on a hot summer day....yum!
