On the northernmost point of Keweenaw County there's a parcel of land, with forest and rocky shoreline, preserved as a Nature Conservancy - The Mary Macdonald Preserve at Horseshoe Harbor. One of Pasty Central's newest Guest Gallery contributors, Steve Brimm has actually been a regular with the Pasty Cam for awhile. By the looks of it, Steve laced up his hiking boots and made the two mile trek in to bring us a beautiful vista of the shoreline of Lake Superior. Of course if he had a four wheel drive he didn't need his hiking boots at all. Whichever mode of transportation he chose, it's a very peaceful scene to start out the week.

Good Morning from Olympia, WA. Just caught up on reading cam notes from yesterday. Julie Beck from Chassell - just a bit of history from yesterday's pic of DREAMLAND. Back in the 1930's my grandfather, Jim Bonini, either owned or managed Dreamland. I have pictures very similar to the one on these pages of my Mom and her sisters and brothers on the porch, etc. The people in the picture here don't look familiar to me though. Was an earlier time. Not sure what year but my grandpa moved into Lake Linden and owned and ran the hotel across from Lindel's. Jim, Francis and George Sarazin were brothers and had the Dreamland by then. Jim and his wife Gladys ran the hotel ever since I can remember and their kids helped, maybe they run it now, I am not sure. To my shame I cannot remember all the kids names, at least two sons and two daughters, but all I can remember is Dan at the moment. Which one are you related to? My mother's sister, Lillian, married George. E-mail me and I will answer your questions if I can.

I can't believe how much more beautiful the U.P. is than what it seems to be here, on this web site. I think that the hardest thing that I had to do was cross that wonderful bridge to leave and head back to what I call the real world. I mean that in a most respectful way. I believe that the Dreamland Hotel has always been owned by the Sarazin family. This is a very old and interesting family. There is a book, I am not sure of the title but it is something like "Characters of the Keweenaw" and there is a chapter dedicated to Jim's grandfather. He built the Bootjack school for the children in the area. I met an elderly women, Eilly Lahti, who was one of the first teachers. She was originally from Jacobsville. As a young women she was hired by Mr Sarazin and roomed with the family in the large Victorian home that was once across the road from the school on the lake(it eventually burned down). Miss Lahti was told that the Indians,who fished on Portage Lake, were given permission to enter the house to take what food they needed. He told her not to be afraid and that they would only take what they needed. She said one day they did tie up their canoes, walk into the house and went directly to the pantry and silently took what they needed and left ... .. Miss Laht eventually went to nursing school and served in WW11. She said her family had strawbery fields in Jacobsville and family donated the land on which the church was built.

Does anyone remember that the role that defined Ronald Reagan was Laurium's own George Gipp? He is buried in Lake View Cemetery....I know because he was a relative, and is buried near my folks.

Please explain the Ronald Reagan thing more "relative".

George Gipp was born and raised in Laurium. Eulogies of Ronald Reagan referred to him affectionately as "the Gipper", a nickname he earned not during his years in politics, but for one of his most famous screen roles.
Reagan's first big role as an actor was playing ill-fated football star George Gipp in the 1940 film classic, Knute Rockne - All-American.
In the one of the movie's most famous scenes, a dying, bed-ridden Gipp - nicknamed the Gipper - urges his college teammates to win a critical football game in his honour.
"Win one for the Gipper," Reagan says in the film.
The role catapulted the young Ronald Reagan to fame, and the nickname "the Gipper" stuck with him forever after.

To Todd of Bootjack: I have known your sister Sally for many years. She is married to my cousin Ron Beaudette. I believe my Uncle George spends alot of time in the Dreamland Hotel --- in which capacity - not sure - probably at a stool in front of the bar! :)

I remember the movie well! It was standard "old movie" fare on TV during the '50's and '60's while I was growing up in Kenosha, Wisc. WGN on Chicago would run it several times during the football season.
George may have been the most famous Gipp, but there many others in the Gipp clan with exceptional talents.
Probably the toughest of them all was the first Gipp in America, Anton. He came to America during the early days of the Copper Country and enlisted in the 27th Michigan during the Civil War at age 46! He served in all that unit's campaigns which included the terrible battles of 1864 and 1865 and was wounded at the "angle" at Spotsylvania. He recovered, finished out the war and returned to the Copper Country where he lived into his 90's. Would have loved to have talked to him! What a life story.

My husband worked with a Gipp lady at the Atlas Powder Plant at Point Mills.I think her name was Marilyn. This was in the late 50's. She was from Laurium.

When I worked at the County Hosp.in the 50's I took care of a Mr.Sarazin. He was a nice elderly gentleman.

Ever pastycam picture is so enjoyable, it is fine to see a "rerun" once in a while. Steve Brimm's album is outstanding. The lilypad photo with its bright colors look great on the computer desktop. Both cheerful and peaceful! As always, everyone's comments are so informative and interesting. That's what keeps this site head and shoulders above all others. It is refreshing, and makes me thankful to have grown up in such a particularly special and beautiful place on Earth as the Copper Country.

This website helps to cure my homesickness for "God's Country". I am a Mass City Finn girl misplaced in Oklahoma City for a spell. I always save the beautiful pictures of the Great Lake (as well as others) as wallpaper. So nice to have something so special for every season. Keep up the wonderful photography everyone. Ya'll should know how much those of us away from home enjoy them. Can't wait to get back! They talk funny here!

My Uncle Robert Haun, has spent alot of time and effort tracing the family geneology. It appears that all the Gipps are decendants of Anton Gipp who was born about 1810 in Lutzerath, Prussia (Germany). He came to the Copper Country very early - late 1840's. He married Agnes Boeltes. The decendants of their children form the various branches of the Gipp family. George was Anton's grandson. His father was Matthew Gipp. We trace our family back to Anton through his daughter Mary. It is safe to say the person you mentioned is at least a cousin by blood or marriage to George Gipp the football player. By the way, football was his second sport - baseball was his main interest.

Somewhere i have a book about the Gippers life .I do think Anton is mentioned.It certainly discussed his love of baseball at Calumet High. Was he awarded a contract to a major league team before his death? By the way, the book refered to Calumet & Hec{K}la {with the K}every time C&H was brought up.It sure made me wonder about the authors research.

I believe the team was the Cubs. I would have to look it up before I say it with 100% certainty.
