Let's get a Headstart    ...scroll down to share comments

Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 07:29 am:

Looks like Rob Wetton spotted a sight you don't see too often in town. Better yet, he was lucky enough to be armed with his camera! Perhaps these Odocoileus virginianus are just heading over to register their fawns for fall classes. If that's the case, the Dead End sign is not a good omen, since getting a Headstart on education is anything but a dead end!

This is the perfect opportunity to remind all parents and grandparents that it's that time of year when you should get your preschool and kindergarten age children registered for the fall school year!

How d'you know it was him who crossed the road?

By Andrew, MI on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:20 am:

Please reply!!!

When do the flies and mosquitos start getting bad up there. I'm coming to the UP next weekend (May 1) for a camping trip, and I'm wondering if mosquito netting and DEET are things I will need. Thanks for the help!!!

By ccgal on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:25 am:

he herd a buck could buy doe for bread which he was fawn of...

By J,chassell on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:25 am:

Andrew, if you are camping up here next weekend you will need a parka, not netting. No bugs yet, it's still too cold. Bring your long underwear, chook, parka, mitts etc. I have heard the ticks are starting to come out though and if we have some warm days there will be plenty of those. Evenings will be cool so plan accordingly. Happy camping!

By Dave, Laurium on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:27 am:

Because the chicken retired....

By deer crossed because... on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:31 am:

someone behind him was playing bagpipes.

By me on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:32 am:

Maybe he never did cross the road. The word is out there what happens when one tries to cross the road!

By finnferrfunn on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:41 am:

Because the sign said 'deer crossing'....

By Deerie on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:45 am:

Deer readers, That deer sure has a long tail. It looks like a Pointer. No criticism intended.

By Steve normally in VA on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:46 am:

Greetings from Chaguaramas, Trinidad where instead of deer running across the road, you have to drive around dogs sleeping in the middle of the road!

By Lynn in A2 on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 08:47 am:

Good Morning,
That tree doesn't look like it's budding out yet.
As long as the lake is liquid, I can throw in the kayak.

By EM,MI on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 09:15 am:

Deerie, What looks like the deers tail is just some leftover snow in the background:) Look close.

By Deerie on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 09:27 am:

EM,Mi, Your right,my eyesight is not at its best, early in the morning.I goofed,Sorry about that.

By Doug the Troll, Wixom, MI on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 10:34 am:

Maybe they are looking for the Deer Crossing sign? Gotta be safe!

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 10:40 am:

They've got Spring Fever! Who doesn't like to get out after a long U.P. winter?

By Ex yooper on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 10:55 am:

As for the chicken: She got run over by a Bosch Beer truck when she tried to lay it on the line.

By Herb_Wis on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:03 am:

Here in Northern Wis. the mosquitoes come out
in FORCE around 20 May. There may be a few
early birds before that, but not many. I imagine
that the U.P. is similar or within a few days of
that.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:06 am:

To Dave of Laurium. Red Wings 0 --- San Jose 1. I will be in Detroit for the game on May 1. As you can see, Detroit is my other team.

By mel, WA on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:10 am:

Mornin' from Washington - you guys are great! What an awesome way to start Friday! Enjoy the weekend!!

By Calumet gal, MI on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:21 am:

The biting black flies and mosquitos are terrible during the month of June, you have nothing to worry during the month of May except for some cold days and nights. Happy Camping!!

By vaalea on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:23 am:

The deer crossed the road to play chicken

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:28 am:

A few years back the kids and I were driving to Manistique to visit family and we couldn't even count the deer in the fields..there seemed to be hundreds of them everywhere. Really a neat thing to see!

By JEFF OREGON on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 12:26 pm:

By J.P. on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 02:49 pm:

PatTillman played four seasons with the Cardinals before enlisting in the Army in May 2002. The safety turned down a three-year, $3.6 million deal from Arizona. Tillman's agent, Frank Bauer, has called him a deep and clear thinker who has never valued material things.

By Dave, Laurium on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 03:30 pm:

Sad about Tillman and all of the men and women lost, I don't know how to download a photo to the message board here, but if you click on my name, it 'MAY' take you to an appropriate picture which says a lot about our servicemen making the sacrifice.

By Dave, Laurium on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 03:32 pm:

No, that didn't work, try this URL address: http://pasty.com/pcam/yooper66/100_0371

By finnferrfunn on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 03:40 pm:

Yep!..:)

By Troll in Eagle Harbor on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 05:44 pm:

Things are startring to look a lot better at the Mountain Lodge...The golf course crew is on the ball...Monday and Tuesday they scooped the snow off the greens...Won't be long we'll be hearing that wonderful "CRACK" as another ball sails down off the tee...

By walter p tampa on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 05:57 pm:

the deer look to be in good shape

By trish,wa on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 06:00 pm:

Troll in Eagle Harbor, oh, the Keweenaw Mtn. Lodge...
now there's a classy old place. The last time we were
there my husband walked up to the main lodge after
dark....that old black bear he literally met face-to-face
was sure a big fellow. They each took off in opposite
directions, and we'll never know who was more
frightened.

By Connie - Colorado on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 09:25 pm:

By bobby, VA on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:00 pm:

By Troll in Eagle Harbor on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:14 pm:

Last time I got gas in Mohawk it was a buck.89

By Bthecute1 on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:18 pm:

It looks to me like the deer are headed toward the Calumet Waterworks.

By outstater on Saturday, April 24, 2004 - 12:25 am:

See the deer, does the deer have a little Doe?
Yea, two buck's!
Nyuck, nyuck.
How do they train the deer to cross at the signs?

By Bill Denning, Texas on Saturday, April 24, 2004 - 01:09 am:

In Houston, Texas, you can get 93 octane for $1.80 per gallon if you know where to look. But mose name brand stations such as Shell or Exxon are around $1.91.

Our engine knocks like crazy on lower octane, so I don't watch the lower grades as much, but I think $1.62 for 87 octane would be about the cheapest you could find this week.

By Kevin K. Lodi, CA on Saturday, April 24, 2004 - 02:18 am:

Here in Lodi CA. We are paying $2.29 for 92 octane.

By danbury; germany on Saturday, April 24, 2004 - 10:34 am:

Try this: ca. $3.55 on regular (roughly). You didn't think gas was expensive, did ya? ;)

By DH on Saturday, April 24, 2004 - 12:36 pm:

$2.23 for 87 in San Diego
