Mary Drew, packing up in FL on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 03:06 am:

Now this is a classic winter picture to show folks living where the "snow don't go", what this season is all about... getting out and having fun! Leave it to Z-Man to come up with a pensive looking youngster, leaving us all to draw our own conclusions as to what he's thinking at the moment.

One more day in the sun, then we start the long drive home. Along with my laptop, Pasty.net Nationwide Dial-in, has been a trusty companion, keeping me "on the job" and in touch with the U.P.

By leigh, zhuhai, prc on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 03:11 am:

It's wonderful to be able to look at the UP and be refreshed any time of the day.

I look forward to looking at the image everyday.

By peter Dbn.,Mi on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 07:04 am:

oh to be young and care free again.
Wonderfull shot, always enjoy the daily picts
here. Bring back some Fla. sun on your return
Mary. Safe trip...

By Sick of the white stuff on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 07:26 am:

I am looking forward to spring photos. This is a cute pic though.

By Mary Drew getting a NATURAL HIGH in Florida on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 09:12 am:

Just a reminder folks, it's ok to disagree, but let's remember to disagree politely. We all have our own opinions, that's what makes America great. In case you missed the note above, the debate which today's shot inspired has it's own page (click here).

As for me, I'm off to try parasailing this morning! Wish me luck!! :->

A few other shots from the same day. Enjoy

By ME, Iowa on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 10:03 am:

I remember my first snow mobile ride. It was with a boy (gasp!) I was about 15. It was a beautiful night, full of stars and the cemetary was so beautiful. We didn't own one, my folks cross country'd. What would John Dee do all day without his?? Love ya, John:)
Rain and wind in Iowa today, folks.
Former Yooper

By RD, Iowa on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 10:09 am:

Thanks, Z-Man, for some great shots as always in your slideshow. I wonder if the folks notice that the youngsters sled in today's picture is a "Mini-Z" ??

By danbury; germany on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 10:10 am:

Oh mi gosh, another debate, that early in the day? And there was me having a first glance at the pic, thinking hey, that's a nice one!
Although I can imagine snowmobiles can cause a really hot debate, maybe even more so than logging.

By L2-lp-always a yooper on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 10:11 am:

When I was a kid we had one too, a Rupp!
It was a long time ago, but never will I forget the beautiful nights, the air was cold and crisp.
This is why we love this site! MEMORIES........

By vaalea on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 11:19 am:

How cute!
On my last trip up north I watched two little guys on little yellow sleds ride over a little snow mound. They got a bit of air and were having the best time. They were little Flyin' Finns!!

By Kevin K. Lodi, CA. on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 11:27 am:

This picture brings back fond memeories.
Cruising across Duck Lake in Highland, Mi. and riding the hills at Highland Hills golf course.
Nothing like being pulled behind on a saucer sled with 50' of waterski towrope between you.
What a thrill!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 11:59 am:

WHOA! Looks like a tad of snow at the Bridge! I look at that often, but man... It's really coming down today!

P.S. My 13 year old son just finished my brand new Website, where I am celebrating 35 years in professional music. I'd love for you to see what he's done. (Yes, I am VERY proud of him). I sure wouldn't mind a few Yoopers signing my guest book! :) www.harrison-entertainment.com

I need to squeeze in a photo of the UP somewhere there... and make a comment on how I long to be back there!

Enjoy your snow folks! We got bombed with it last week. I think the total accumulation was an inch. . (That's a blizzard here... Ask Fran!)

Alex

By Fran,Ga on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 12:34 pm:

Gees I can't beleive another argument over a cute picture. Charlie, I am glad you moved it off here. I come here for enjoyment of the pictures and the conversation.

Alex, yes an inch of snow is a disaster. However our "snow"was elusive it was gone by morning!
I'll have to take a look at the new site and see Josh's work!

FOLKS,Alex is very talented! He has a wonderful singing voice!!! I never mentioned it before cause I wasn't sure if he wantd me too.

By Troll, Lwr MI on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 12:55 pm:

Fran,GA:
I'm with you and lets get over the talk on the snowmobiles. I think we "get it"! That goes for all the lumberjack wanna-bee's too--mooove on!!!!! Lets enjoy our pasties and pictures!

Checked the bridge camera, man, I could hardly see the bridge! Down yonder, we have extremely high winds and rain but I guess I'll take it than all that snow. I'm so ready for spring!

By EM,MI on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 01:14 pm:

Great Pics Z-Man. Always wonderful to see kids having fun. Thanks

By troll with connections, Taylor, Mi on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 01:39 pm:

Hi all,
I haven't seen any comments on February's Finn Fest 2004, down in Lake Worth, Fla. I was wondering how it was. And does anyone know where it will be for 2005?

By danbury on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 04:24 pm:

Ernie, scott: Would you please put that in the discussion where it belongs?
Thanks

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 04:45 pm:

I have a question about the bridge cam... is the picture taken in Houghton, looking towards Hancock? Or from Hancock, looking towards Houghton? Just curious!

By Jo Ann Hancock on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 05:29 pm:

Audrey, San Jose,Ca .... the bridge cam is on the Hancock side of the bridge looking toward downtown Houghton. The snow seems to have ended here by now. We did not get as much as predicted but the southern counties of the UP must have as they were cancelling school all over by 6 a.m. Here in the Keweenaw saw heavy snow but our schools stayed open. Everyone I saw today said the roads were very "greasy". So ironic since they were telling me this thru my fast food drive thru window...:-) Looking forward to spring.

By Audrey, SJ, CA on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 05:38 pm:

Jo Ann... thanks for the response! Funny, cause whenever I'd look at the picture, I'd visualize being in Houghton, looking towards Hancock! Now I have to reorient myself. Speaking of spring, it's very spring-like here today in San Jose. Spring fever is happening all over, or maybe that's because it's Friday and almost the weekend!

By fmr Yooper on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 05:47 pm:

Audrey,

Same here. Then one day I realized the sun doesn't set in the east. :-) Of course the sun needs to be out.

Sure is great when when the sun does come out.

By Bill. CO on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 07:00 pm:

have fun! I got another foot last night. Wish I was in the UP!

By WALTER P TAMPA on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 07:01 pm:

HOW MUCH SNOW SO FAR???????? ANYONE KNOW

By Carole on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 07:08 pm:

Alex, I cannot log onto your site using the web address in your post. Am I doing something wrong?

By miss snow on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 07:21 pm:

Look at all that pretty new white snow. Nothing like a
good, blustery March storm. What is the church on the
Houghton side on the far left -with the steeple showing?
(from the Bridge Cam)

Regarding Yesterdays Posts about Good Eats in the Copper Country to Steve in Naperville also---

I am a cook at the Suomi, so I guess I was tooting my own horn! :D But I do love working there and it is always nice to see the restaurant full of satisfied customers---

But I agree with you listing the others--- I must admit, when not working I do go spread my money around because I NEVER want to cook for myself after doing it all day! :D But, in another sort of confession--- I get a lot of take out from the Suomi as well LOL---

It must be an occupational hazzard! Oh well, it is a great place to work as well as to eat, I will say that!

Have a great day everyone!!! And yes we sure did get some snow today!

By Michele Houghton MI on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 08:19 pm:

Walter P in Tampa

To date as listed in The Daily Mining Gazette, Houghton MI has 237.5 inches of snow. Ain't that grand???! Personally I am waiting for the heat of summer, but I know it is far too early. I long for my regular cooling dips in Lake Superior at Agate Beach-- nothing finer than doing that on a hot summer day!

By pj,mi on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 08:40 pm:

Walter P, Tampa: Today's Gazette has Houghton Co. with a total of 237.5" and 33" on the ground. Keweenaw Co. total is 210.9" and 29" on the ground.

By Greta, Milwaukee on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 08:48 pm:

The bridge sure does look spectacular tonight. Must be the cleaner air after the snow.

By CK in Chassell on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 08:49 pm:

I'd echo the comments about the Suomi restaurant. They serve a great breakfast there; probably the best breakfast in the area.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 09:01 pm:

To Carole: Really? I just looked at my last post and it's correct. Try here:

Hope you can get there and thanks for looking.

By Down State Dave on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 09:06 pm:

Z-man, once again, thanks for a grrrreat picture!

By Down State Dave on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 09:14 pm:

OK, I got home late so I am just now reading all of the comments and controversy. Some of you people are really sick. My gosh! Every one knows that the only condiment for pasties is Catsup! Gravy? Who ever heard of such a thing! I bet Rush Limbaugh doesn't eat gravy on his pasty. (Hmmm, Maybe he used too though, before he lost all of that weight. Yeah! That's it! I just invented a new diet! Plain pasties! No catsup, no gravy, just plain unadulterated pasties!)
Are pasties bad for the enviroment?

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 10:13 pm:

Hei,troll with connections, Taylor, MI. The FINNGRANDFEST 2005 will be in Marquette in August. Here in Cornell this morning and afternoon we got 11 more inches of heavy wet snow. The wind is still moving it around.

By Angelflight Steve on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 10:24 pm:

I gave my German friend the site and he ended up ordering 12 of the finest pastys offered. He is going to give a "pasty party" to his friends. I only hope he did not displace and "e", but regardless, a good dinner will be enjoyed by all. No problem, he may be German, but he lives in Detroit.............the Cass Corridor.....

By moi on Friday, March 5, 2004 - 10:46 pm:

Awesome memories for this kid. A dad/uncle/brother spending time with his boy- something America desperately needs more of. Have fun!!

By Julie Barrie The Netherlands formly Michigan on Saturday, March 6, 2004 - 03:51 am:

Ive said this before about coming here to relax
and not all this "debating" ... its like some
people want to have one better idea or one better put down .. why is that?...Im sure this sight was
set up to view nature and places and framilar things that we all know about the UP from living there now or from our famlies in the past ...
I try to relate things from when my father and
grandfather lived up there as a miner in 1800s
coming over from Wales the Cornwall area....
I for one maybe "corney" but I dont think this
is the place to be so rude to each other ...
on that note everyone have a good weekend .. enjoy
it...:)

Carole & harrison-entertainment:
Dunno, maybe a connection problem?
Visited myself, enjoyed looking around the site, no problem.

By danbury; germany on Saturday, March 6, 2004 - 06:00 am:

One question:
What is a catch-22?
CK, perhaps?
(hope it's not offensive)

By Carole on Saturday, March 6, 2004 - 09:02 am:

Thanks Alex, now connected to your site with above link you provided. Must be something on my end. By the way, great site.

By bj-milford on Saturday, March 6, 2004 - 09:13 am:

Catch-22 is an idiom....they do not always translate well. It's based on the book "Catch-22" and it means the same as "between a rock and a hard place". Hope that helps.

By danbury on Saturday, March 6, 2004 - 09:49 am:

Yeah, quite so, thank you, bj-milford. Get more of an idea out this than just the expression itself.
