Welcome to October! Thanks to Danielle Mahoney for several nice folders in the Guest Gallery. To see more from Lake Michigamme, you might click over to the Maple Ridge Resort, but be sure to come back here if you'd like some pasties delivered next week.

Hey, I'm the first one to log in!!!!!
Beautiful picture. New wallpaper for my computer!!!!

By Marianne, Houghton, MI on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 08:30 am:

This picture is torture!!
Poem for today:

Ode to the Keweenaw in Fall (?)....

On my way to work--what a sight!
Snow-topped buses, left and right

Only yesterday, sun and fall hues,
this snow and sleet gives me the blues.

Oh well, I guess it's not the worst,
but for goodness sake, it's October first!

Don't worry about us, we'll be fine,
after all, today's high is a steamy thirty-nine!

Lord, please send a little autumn our way,
Our beautiful fall lasted only a few days.

I'm on the road this week (in Kansas City, MO) and hadn't been able to get on the internet even to check my e-mail until this morning. One of the first webpages I check is always pasty.com (a sure cure for homesickness when you're on the road all the time.) Did a double take at the picture before I realized it was mine! Made me smile. Thanks Charlie!

Love the poem Marianne! :) In as much as we here in Cadillac, have also seen some white stuff in the air... I'm of the same sentiment! It would be nice to enjoy some fall color! The big picture is lovely this morning! Thanks Danielle!

Marianne, a great way to express to the One above that we'd appreciate a colorful fall since we skipped spring and shortened summer. But He can feel free to zip through the season of snowflakes and ice.

What a great picture! Fall is a beautiful season. On Friday we will be in da UP!!! YEA!!! Cant wait!!!

By klk on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 01:27 pm:

We will be in the UP next week - We would like to check out some out of the way waterfalls. What are some of your favorites? Hungarian Falls will be on our list to see, that was a great picture last week. Thanks for your input.

By Marsha, Genesee and Aura on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 02:02 pm:

My favorite is Silver River Falls, north of L'anse, not the one in the Keweenaw. Its easily accessible and beautiful in the fall, lots of colored leaves underfoot, etc., and a great photo op!

By Nancy E. Nelson, WI on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 06:50 pm:

Would like to find out how to get to Hungarian Falls. I remember visiting them in the spring when I was young (50's) but have not been able to find how to get to them in the past few years. Maybe a good project for someone would be to create a map, or directions, to find some of these beautiful falls in the Keweenaw.

From what vantage point was this picture taken? I have many fond memories of Lake Michigamme--Girl Scout camp at the Methodist campground, and both camper, when young, then worker at Presbytery Point when I was in college. It is a very beautiful spot. Is Mount Shasta still operating?

By Steve the Troll on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 07:32 pm:

Snow in Detroit today at 7000 feet. Ferried an airplane from Indiana to Detroit and could not believe snow this early in the season. This could be the year to remember....(The winter of 03

By Carole on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 08:08 pm:

Nancy - Mt. Shasta is closed and for sale? But I am trying to remember another restaurant that is on the right hand side of the road going west on 41 and might have it confused with Mt. Shasta, because one of them is still opened. Passed by there a few weeks ago.

By D. Mahoney, exiled to MO for the week on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 08:19 pm:

Nancy - the picture was taken from the rest area on M-28/US-41 overlooking Lake Michigamme. I have lots of fond memories of this lake as well - I went to 4-H camp a couple of times there, and once we spent a week there in a rented cabin with my parents and grandparents when we were kids. The thing that sticks out most in memory about that trip was how warm Lake Michigamme was, since we usually went swimming in Superior!

D from Lake Linden, just curious: what makes you think God is a "he"?

By RD, Iowa on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 08:57 pm:

Because His Son told us so.

By Sandy, UP on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 08:58 pm:

Nancy and Carole: Mt. Shasta is closed and up for sale. It's really a shame as they always had good food and lots of memoribilia. Hopefully someone will be able to open it again before too long.

I have found this wonderful link and love it. The scenery is gorgeous and I miss that living here in Algiers,La..I miss the snow, the mountains, etc I work in a Denentia Unit on weekends and understand we all need love, patience and prayer. no matter what is going on in our lives.

By Dina on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 10:21 pm:

The leaves are falling already in the UP? Has it snowed yet?

By Rose, MN on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 11:01 pm:

I saw snow today as I was leaving the UP, Houghton had a dusting and it looked like Paulding had about 3 inches.

By Jo Ann Hancock on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 11:37 pm:

klk, click on Maple Ridge Resort in Charlie's message and they have a wonderful list of waterfalls in the UP. Not all are there but many that I have never heard of before....Good Luck and have a nice trip.

Isn't true that Jimmy Stewart tickled the Ivory at Mt. Shasta ?

By Troll, MI on Friday, October 3, 2003 - 08:22 am:

Sam Again:
I remember my mom telling me about them filming Anatomy of a Murder in and around the U.P. and they did the dance hall scenes at Mt. Shasta. Years later, we stopped their for breakfast on the way back home from the UP. They had pictures of the cast all around the dining area. I hope the new owners keep the pictures. I saw the movie for the very first time last year. The dance scene was a quick glimse. I'm sure Jimmy Stewart (my favorite actor of all time) tickled those ivorys.....

By the way everyone, Elmer Hoyer mentioned on April 1st (postmaster from Dollar Bay) is my Grandfather. I'll have to ask my dad to verify that 39 pound fish story though!
