In spite of the fact we may hit 60° today, Maki in Korea and Dan Urbanski in Silver City, MI, team up to give you a feel for lingering frozen conditions in the woods and the shadows. Last night when Edie and I returned from Escanaba, we took Cliff drive, and she pointed out just how much snow was still in the shaded areas, like this spot where Dan found a gossamer trace of a Maple leaf fading away.

Overnight Toivo emailed me he was spending an extra day in Louisiana, hungry for some Creole food down in the French Quarter. Well, Toivo, Edie and I shared a delicious Pasty Central pasty for lunch yesterday with the Michigan Business Educators Association and MACUL at Bay College. It doesn't get much better than this. But we'll give our traveling Toivolian the weekend to see if New Orleans cuisine can top it.

By Mary Lou on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 09:05 am:

Charlie....I hope you and Edi were treated well in Escanaba and that you both enjoyed some of our "U.P...Southern Hospitality"...ya'll come back.now, ya hear....

I WANT TO MAKE A COMMENT ABOUT STILLWATERS FACILITY. I GO THERE TO VISIT ONCE IN A WHILE & AM SO IMPRESSED WITH THE FANTASTIC CARE & SERVICE THAT IS BEING PROVIDED FOR THE OLDER PEOPLE. I JUST HAD TO COMPLIMENT THEM ON ALL OF THERE EFFORTS. AND THE STAFF IS SO KIND & FREINDLY. YOU WOULD HAVE TO GO FAR TO FIND ANOTHER PLACE THAT IS THIS EFFICIENT. IT SURE IS A BLESSING TO THE AREA & I'M SURE THE "GOOD SHEPHERD "HAS A HAND IN THE SERVICE OF ALL LOCATED THERE!

By Alex Tiensivu, On The Lookout For Toivo, in Georgia on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 01:28 pm:

Two more states, and then BOOM! Toivo lands in Georgia! I need someone to show us a picture of him, so I know who to look out for! :)

By RCW $ Bay on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 02:27 pm:

Hey Toivo: If and when you pass through Gulfport Ms. Give a toot to the young (Sherry) girl that was featured on the Paul Bunyan Chair a while back.

By Sam, from Ramsay on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 02:42 pm:

WOW! great shot of a great spot. Reminds me of a few scenes like this I have seen recently in my travels. AHHH, God bless the U.P. !

By Martha K., Pinckney, MI on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 04:20 pm:

The leaf picture is extraordinary! What fragile perfection. Dan you have such a good eye!

By the way, just looked at Toivo's Arkansas license plate and noticed its motto "The Natural State." Does that mean the rest of us live in unnatural states?

By Mary on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 08:51 pm:

Alex:
Toivo posted a picture of himself back on October 7th, 2002. I copied it from the archives here for you....hope this helps!

Toivo - - more like he looks today

By Ima Yooper on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 09:49 pm:

And yes, the resemblance to Mel Gibson is downright scary.

By Mary on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 10:12 pm:

For anyone wondering what Ima Yooper is talking about, click on the link below and scroll down until you see Toivo's posting on that day!! :)

Toivo in his younger days and more like he looks today!!

By pikkuleipa on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 10:12 pm:

Charlie thanks for allowing me to share a pasty cam page with Dan Urbanski. Dan is a true professional. Dan, I was up in your neck of the woods at the porkies in early March before heading back to Korea...got some real nice shots from up on the slopes. I thought you probably wished you could have been there with your full photog gear.

Thanks to all that have had the opportunity to view the shots of bond falls and the shots of the porkies and Lake Superior at my web album, over 2500 people have checked them out!...alot of nice comments via e-mail and support for the troops overseas.

If anyone knows SMSgt John Johnson also from the UP. I can get ahold of him here in Korea, he arrived in Feb 03, and I can pass on any well wishes etc.

Maki, Glad you enjoyed your visit here. The snow has
receded enough now that we can visit our local
landmark, Lake of the Clouds. I've been busy with other
things, but I'll be up there for a "renewal" soon.

By Proud grannny - U.P. on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 08:53 am:

Toivo, I thought you were an old ----! You are much younger than I pictured. Mel Gibson has nothin' on you hunnie!

By Dan U. on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 08:54 am:

Oops, nice shot of Bond falls! Never occurred to me to
shoot in that direction!

By Proud Yooper - MI on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 08:56 am:

I thought we weren't suppose to have anymore snow pictures - After all it's been six months of winter here already.....time for Spring!

By cak on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 09:12 am:

Glad to see that I was not the only one who thought Toivo was older. See cam note from August 27th, 2002 - first post. Toivo mentions the first day of school for him half a century ago. But what do I know, I thought Taka was a she.

By the shadow on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 09:36 am:

cak, Toivo and Taka are the same person....

What part of Iowa are you from/living ?

By RD, Iowa on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 04:39 pm:

Cedar Falls. I see Dickeyville is down by Dubuque.

Yes, live about 7 miles from Dubuque. I like meeting transplanted yoopers in all the places I've lived. I get down to Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, often, but not over to Cedar Falls much.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia, and still looking for Mel... err... Toivo! on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 11:51 pm:

Ooooo! What have I started? :) I have to agree with Granny! I thought he was MUCH older! He looks younger than me! I guess it must be the high mileage... I thought his age was up there too! -ROFL-

By Ken from da UP on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 12:11 am:

Hei, Donn, I really love that close-up of the maple leaf and the pine needles and seeds. I've looked at leaves like this many times and just marveled at the complex veins and cells. This is beautimous!! So fragile. I've heard that 'fragile' is a French word for "Throw underhand!" :o) Do you suppose?

By Toivo, checking in from AL on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 12:45 am:

Ken - - the leaf was from Dan, not Donn. Although Donn has also done some excellent leaves:

Way to go, RD, I feel like one of the 3 stooges.

By Ken from da UP on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 12:17 am:

Sorry 'bout that Dan, thought it was Donn. Still a beautimous pic!
