I want to make a request for the Pasty-Cam, on Aug. 31, 1999, our 14th wedding anniversary. How about a picture of some of the old copper mine ruins? I know they're slowly disappearing over the years, and they are what made the Keweenaw Peninsula what it is. The chimney at Clark Mine outside Copper Harbor? Or, the brick ruins at Central Mine? I haven't seen anything like this on the Pasty-Cam, and think it'd be interesting.
Thanks.

Great idea! This will give Eino and Toivo an excuse to do a little explorin' :o) Stay tuned in September!

By Matt Kawamura, Sacramento CA on Monday, August 30, 1999 - 02:03 pm:

You have a wonderfully whimiscal and easy to navigate site here! I can smell the pasties baking even through the polluted air of California!!! :-) I love the view of the lift bridge and the Pasty Cam. Thank you for keeping this site out here. I definitely plan to try some pasties soon.

By Esther-SanDiego,Ca. on Sunday, August 29, 1999 - 05:07 pm:

I love the Pasty Cam. Having spent the first 14 yrs. of my life in the U.P. I know pasties!!! But Mom had to make her own back then (l930's) I still make them for my family - not often enough according to them - but they are loads of work!!!!I love the weekly pictures of familiar and new places. I try to get back to the U.P.as often as I can. Missed out this year.Would love to see a picture (taken inside) of the large windows in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Laurium. The Sanctuary is also beautiful! Keep up the good work!!!!Thanks!!!!

By Pam, Purdy WA on Sunday, August 29, 1999 - 03:45 pm:

Dear Pasty Cam,
Just a note to tell you what a great job you are doing! It's not easy coming up with photos every day, and meeting everyone's requests, but you are making many people happy. Thank you!!!

By Nancy Carter, Cornwall, UK on Sunday, August 29, 1999 - 06:22 am:

Reference message about Pasty Cam being advertised in The Cornishman newspaper in Cornwalll, England. The article was also printed in The West Briton newspaper. We are probably too late to be the first ones to send a copy of the paper, but could we still qualify if we bring it in person? We view your site regularly and enjoy the glimpses it gives us of UP. We have a visit to the Keweenaw planned for September, we love to visit and stay with relatives in Hancock.

By Mary, Illinois on Sunday, August 29, 1999 - 12:25 am:

Always enjoy looking at the pictures on pasty cam brings back memories. How bout some pictures of L'Anse??? I grew up there, also lived in Calumet & Hancock for a while. Friends & family still there, wasn't able to make a trip up this summer.
Thanks, and keep it up.

Is that a Ford I see on the left side of the

Friday Aug.27,I love the pic of the church in South Range with the snow, it's 84 degrees here at 9:00 PM, and muggy, so looking at snow isn't so bad right now. Keep those pics coming. I get to appreciate this site more and more.

After some prodding from my mother,I checked out your website>By far the BEST yet.As a Yooper stuck in MN for too long(14 years),It is time to move back>I am looking forward to being in the Keewenaw Sept.2-3 and Ontonagon through the 7th for rest and recharging. Keep up the good work.

By Joe Stanley PENZANCE Cornwall UK on Thursday, August 26, 1999 - 01:30 pm:

Thought you might like to know your site has been "advertised" in "The Cornishman" the local paper for Penwith, Cornwall, England. The competition around here is very fierce for Cornish Pasties and there are a hundreds of slight variations of the local traditional pasty. Butchers, bakers, filling stations, and the ladies in their home kitchens are all in the very popular local trade.

Thanks for the head's up, Joe. Perhaps one of our Cornwall visitors could send us a copy of the newspaper that mentions Pasty Central?? To the first person who gets a copy to us, we'll send an "I Love Pasties!" T-Shirt! Our mailing address is:

Your Web page just gets better and better. The bridge cam is a super addition to an already excellent page. I got such a kick out of having my bridge picture published on my favorite web site, that I decided to submit another one.

Here's a scene to help us remember during these hot, muggy days that it won't be long until we'll be cool again. This brand new church is in South Range on Whealkate Road just southwest of the new elementary school. Isn't it a beauty, though?

By Dawn from Seattle, WA on Wednesday, August 25, 1999 - 01:43 pm:

Good morning! It is a happy day for me, indeed! The pasties arrived Wednesday morning at 9:45 Pacific Time, still cold, and smelling WONDERFUL! I can't wait to dig in to them.

I must express a heartfelt thank you to your organization for providing access to these wonderful pasties. I last enjoyed one before moving to Seattle while visiting my family in Dollar Bay, MI about 5 years ago. Grandma doesn't make them anymore, but the aunts still do. I have a recipe but have yet to attempt it.

If they taste as good as they smell, you have a repeat customer!

Thank you!
Dawn Johnson

Thanks for the encouragement, Dawn! There must be a colony of Yoopers in the State of Washington, because we have shipped hundreds there this year

By Carl Watkins, Wales, UK on Wednesday, August 25, 1999 - 08:39 am:

Just a quick line or two to say how much I've enjoyed this site during a lunchtime browse. I have no idea how I ended up here but the pasties looked a sight better than my cheese and lettuce sandwich. Does anyone know of a connection between the U.P. and Cornwall, England? Pasties are the traditional fare of the southwestern tip of Britain where they were eaten by tin miners ... tin mining in Corwall dates from Roman times and the last commercial mine closed a couple of years ago. Cornish pasties look identical to those you make, although one old time favorite was a savoury filling in one end and stewed apple in the other ....main course and dessert! The thick crust was for holding the pastie with filthy hands and wasn't eaten. Although I reckon it's the best part. Anyway, keep up the good work and bye from the other side of the (really) big water.

By G. Allen from Florida on Tuesday, August 24, 1999 - 10:22 am:

Just wanted to tell you that the pasties were wonderful... I stopped by Still Waters in Calumet last Wednesday to pay my bill and to say "Hello". The building smelled so good. The receptionist took my payment and said they had just baked 600 pasties that morning. I will definitely order again soon.

In regards to the last shipment, the person who received the package in my apartment complex office placed them in the office refrigerator and no one else in the office knew about it. So, I received them, in excellent condition, the next day.

Thanks again for providing such a great service to the pasty lovers of America.

Sincerely,
Greg Allen

By Liz, Livonia, MI on Monday, August 23, 1999 - 09:53 am:

Just returned last week from a two week stay at our cottage on Sandy Lake. I was surprised to see your photo of Twin Lakes state park, which is right down the road from us. It was also neat to see the photo of the "arch" on the trail to Montreal Falls. My husband and I followed your directions and made it out there this visit. Very nice. (My husband was concerned that the sign on the track to Smith Fisheries says "no trespassing". I didn't think it was a big deal!) Thanks for the directions. I am now trying to pick a date for my fall trek to the U.P. Wish I was retired like my parents and could stay up there for five months!

By Peter Chiomenti, Maryland on Sunday, August 22, 1999 - 09:56 pm:

Here's a picture of a Lake Superior rock that made a journey to Maryland, where it was decorated by our grandniece, Korin Battle age 8 of Silver Spring, Maryland.  The rock is slated to make the return journey to the Keweenaw this fall where it will be a door stop at our camp.  The second picture is of Korin holding her gift to her Uncle Peter & Aunt Lyndelle.

Hope you enjoy this tiny slice of Copper Country life.  By the way, I actually scanned the rock -- yes, a flatbed scanner :-).

By Bruce Fraser, Columbia, Missouri on Friday, August 20, 1999 - 08:39 pm:

I really enjoy your site and get homesick every time I visit it. I lived in Calumet as a boy and always enjoy my visits back. Say hello to my old friend Clyde Wescoat, Copper Harbor Postmaster. I'm ordering my first pasties from you right now. Keep up the good work.

By Susan Poisson Allen, VA on Friday, August 20, 1999 - 01:13 pm:

Have been viewing this site for over a year now,and never tire of seeing the lift bridge, crossed many times on the way to Grandma/Grandpa's house - my Uncle Sonny (Ernie Poisson) owns the former Texaco station in Hubbell, where my dad, Joe Poisson, grew up. I'm transplanted in Virginia, and sorely miss our twice-yearly trips to da U.P.!

Agreeing with my sister's message. Please never stop sending messages and pictures from the land we wish we had never left!!!

By Lisa Walters, Ypsilanti on Monday, August 16, 1999 - 06:24 pm:

I last wrote to say how cool the Lift-Bridge cam is and mentioned that I would be driving across that bridge in a few days. I did; we spent a week in the Keweenaw and I miss it already. My mom grew up in Lake Linden (class of 1934, maiden name Cassette) and I visited annually as a kid. Can't wait to retire to Houghton with a cottage in Eagle Harbor. Until then, I check out your site daily. It's wonderful. Thank you!

By Marian Latimer and Rosie and Tess, Marlette, Michigan on Monday, August 16, 1999 - 11:39 am:

Hi,
Love the pictures, can you try and get the pastycam to the Marquette dog shows (9/3-9/5) as we cannot get there this year? (I have 2 collies who do obedience but have had the summer off because of the heat) We will be coming up your way in October, I hope, and the collie crew would like to know if Still Waters allows pet visits. Both my collie girls are therapy dogs and make visits to nursing homes from time to time. I just sent my best friend and her husband up your way and they had a great time.

By Dennis Warner Illinois on Monday, August 16, 1999 - 10:57 am:

This is a great site. Found out about it from Ken Johnson while we at the John-Carpenter wedding a couple of weeks ago. The Johnson's brought us up to the Keweenaw Peninsula about 30 years ago and we fell in love with the area. It's fun and informative to see the pictures and to know what else is available in the area. Thanks again.

By Terry Bush, Royal Oak, Michigan on Monday, August 16, 1999 - 08:38 am:

Couldn't believe the aerial view of Eagle River! Just Great! My wife and I have a "camp" 2.8 miles West of Eagle River. We would love to see our place from the air. Can you make any recommendations as to how we possibly can make arrangements to do so? We have been up four or five times this year and will be up at least two more times before the new millenium. We had our three grandaughters with us for 9 days about two weeks ago and they lived in the "Big Water". This year and last year have been great for swimming.

Thanks again and we will check with Gitche Gumee when we come up in about two weeks.

We are two very homesick-for-the-UP tech grads. We love your site + show it to all our friends, who must now think the UP is heaven on earth.

Any chance of vegetarian pasties???

Vegetarian pasties are available, and you can order directly from Marie's Deli. We also do special requests, like no carrots or no onions, as well. Enjoy;)

By Joan Velde - Illinoig on Friday, August 13, 1999 - 10:53 pm:

I have a couple of suggestions for the Pasty Cam: how about the little one-room schoolhouse in Copper Harbor? Could you go out in the harbor and take a photo looking towards Copper Harbor's shoreline? My daughter and I have been getting very nostalgic looking at your website, and haven't been up to C.H. for 5 years. Next year or bust!

By Mark H. from Livonia on Friday, August 13, 1999 - 09:24 pm:

I really enjoy your site and particularily love all the 'glimse of life' photos. We've been to the U. P. several times and always enjoyed our visit. Your site and the pictures make us want to visit again soon. The scenery, people and environment are drawing us back. Your site adds to this attraction by showing the quality of life in U. P.

Thank you very much, please keep up great work!

By Sharon , downstate MI on Friday, August 13, 1999 - 09:34 am:

Our pasties arrived about 3:00pm Thursday, Aug. 12. They were still cool when unpacked.

Thank you for making it possible to enjoy the specialness of our beloved Copper Country.

Thanks,

We certainly appreciate all the folks who give us reports of their pasty arrivals. Now over 25,000 shipped to all 50 states.

I JUST LOVE YOUR SIGHT. I VIEW IT EVERY DAY. MY HUSBAND IS A YOOPER AND I TALKED HIM INTO MOVING TO TEXAS 2 YEARS AGO. HE IS SO HOME SICK AND WE NOW HAVE OUR HOME FOR SALE AND I WILL GET HIM BACK TO THE U.P. AS QUICK AS I CAN. AT LEAST HE HAS THIS SIGHT TO VIEW EVERY DAY. I PRINT UP PICTURES ON GOOD PHOTO PAPER AND FRAME SOME AND PUT SOME ON THE FRIDGE SO HE WON'T FEEL SO SAD. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL JOB YOU ARE DOING. JUST GREAT!!!!!!

Funny you should mention the photos on the fridge... We just received some "Pasty Magnets", refrigerator style, coming soon to our expanded GiftNook. Stay tuned!

My wife and I have been enjoying your website for over six months and we have always wanted to send you pictures from our wedding last July 31st in Eagle River. Yes, there are weddings in PastyLand!

...We had decided on a small civil ceremony in "PastyLand" performed by Magistrate (Rick) Thomas. Our reception was at Fitzgerald's overlooking marvelous Lake Superior and we lodged at Mariner North. In attendance were 9 friends and 1 baby.

Let's just say that being in "Copper Country" for a week has changed our lives.

Thanks for the super photos, ... This has been wedding week at the
Pasty Cam, where today we include one of our favorites which you sent.

By Dawn [Brumm] Marmor, Enterprise Oregon on Tuesday, August 10, 1999 - 11:42 pm:

The same day you posted the Cam picture of the sunset rainbow to remember several who died during the month of July (Saturday, July 31), we were celebrating the birth of our first child, Jonathan Lane Marmor, born 9:42 a.m. He is perfectly cute and precious. Thank you for having such a beautiful picture of a place so dear in my memories on his birthday.

Congratulation Dawn And Matt! Thanks for the cute shot of Jonathan :o) ...Dawn, like many of our Pasty Central regulars, is a former Copper Country kid - now with a kid of her own :o)

8/10/99
Greetings to all those wonderful people at Still Waters. True to form...when something good is right in your own backyard...it takes someone from out of town to get you to try those delicious pasties made at Still Waters. Knowing I was going to have company from downstate, I purchased some pasties two weeks ago and yesterday, I shared one with my friend from Lansing. Neither of us have ever tasted any pasties better than these. They are the BEST! Can't wait to have more.
It was nice to see a message from Jan Medved on here, who is very familiar with Swedetown, as I am.

I have a question for you. I was wondering who officiated the Carpenter-Johnson wedding this past weekend. In the pictures it looks like Charlie Hart may have. Thanks so much.

Pastor Hart did have a part in the wedding, and appeared in the
big picture. The wedding vows were administered by Pastor Rick Sisson.

By Carole Krueger, Michigan on Monday, August 9, 1999 - 06:51 pm:

I go onto your website everyday and have requested photos of various places. I now have another request. My daughter and her husband are camping at McLain with their two Harrier dogs, Oakley and Astro. The younger dog loves to swim in the lake all day long, everyday. She wears a bright green life jacket when in the water so you really cannot miss her.

I thought if you were running out of ideas for pictures on this site you might go down to McLain and check the dogs out. They arrived this past Sunday and will be there until the end of next week. Their site is number 88.

Thank you

Carole Krueger

A dog with a life jacket? If the Pasty Cam has a chance, we'll be sure to check it out

By Cathie Tuggle, Hale, Mi. on Monday, August 9, 1999 - 11:39 am:

Your web-site, and especially the pasty-cam is one of the best things on-line! The photos are an endless supply of awesome wallpaper for my monitor. Growing up, I spent many summers wandering about the Keeweenaw, collecting agates and simply falling in love with it all. Then I had the priviledge of living in married housing on the campus of MTU in 1967-69. A part of me will always stay on the shores of Lake Superior and I thank you for letting me reach out and touch those tender memories through your web site. Never quit!

Just wanted to let you know we were in the great Copper Country for a week this summer visiting Charmaine & Walter Perrault, a cousin. We always enjoy coming up and seeing the sights, and looking in the different shops and stores. Was in the bakery downtown and bought some of their delicious pasties. Of course, I also made some for our son when we were in Illinois. They are always good.

Keep up your web page, enjoy taking a peek now and then to see what is going on. God bless all of you up there in the north country. WARMEST REGARDS FROM ARIZONA.

Grace & Bill Bunnell

We have sent a LOT of pasty packages to Arizona the last couple of months. Must be a bunch of transplanted yoopers in the Southwest.

By Lu Ann B. from Tennessee on Sunday, August 8, 1999 - 09:10 pm:

Thank you for the delicious pasties! They arrived last Thursday, as scheduled, but would have been here late Wednesday, had I been home to give Airborne some directions Wednesday afternoon. I simply didn't expect them that quickly. My husband and I have always lived in the South, and just recently made our first visit to your neck of the woods. We were really fascinated by your region's delicacy, the Pasty. They are wonderful! I can't imagine why they haven't been better incorporated into American cuisine. Anyway, yours are simply delicious, and we look forward to enjoying them again soon.

Please give a big "howdy" to all your residents from your new friends in Bulls Gap.

Spent a lot of our growing up years in the Keweenaw area: Calumet, Phoenix, Kearsarge, Mayflower areas. Thoughts and pictures from your website bring back lots of pleasant memories of those days. Thanks for carrying on the legend of the pasty. I'm proud to say my grandpa was one of those Cornish miners who inspired the legend of the pasty, and my grandma was one of the best pasty makers in the world.

Thanks for making our day, and hello from all of the grandmas and grandpas at Still Waters Assisted Living Community, where this service originates.

By M & M, Georgia on Saturday, August 7, 1999 - 09:29 pm:

My spouse and I had lunch today in Atlanta at a restaurant called Joe's on Juniper. It turns out that the nice young man who served us is your grandson. He gave us your website address and suggested we visit. You have a very interesting site that I'm sure we'll visit again.

Meanwhile, your grandson sends along his love.

M & M

Thanks for the pleasant greeting, but we're a little curious about whose grandson referred you to us. None of us who edit the Pasty Central website have any grandchildren of working age. Perhaps one of our Still Waters workers?

Oh, wow! what a great picture today. I remember counting ore boats on the horizon when I was a kid and now it is so rare to see one. I was up in the UP a couple of weeks ago for the first time in several years and pictures like this make me want to be back there instead of in N.Virginia. Thanks for all the great pictures.

Hey Charlie and everyone else!

Just wanted to thank you for the beautiful picture dedication to my late father-in-law, Butch Paye, who was killed in a motorcycle accident last month. It truly was a wonderful dedication. Hey there all of you great pasty makers! Our pasties arrived last Thursday. They were some of the BEST pasties we've ever had. We are planning to order more for us and as gifts for family in a couple of weeks. Everyone there stay healthy and cookin'!

Thanks again,

Thanks for the encouragement, glad to hear the space blanket packaging works :o) Last week were the hottest shipping days of the year, and we received good reports of cool arrivals from a dozen different states. Because of a favorable mention in the Detroit News and Free Press, many packages went to southeast Michigan, where temps were around 100.

As a displaced Michigander longing for our cottage near Munising where I could spend only 10 days this summer, I am a daily visitor to the pasty cam site. Can't tell you what delight it is to see what kind of a day I'm missing in the U.P. Your pictures are lovely and never fail to provoke questions from customers and co-workers who see them wallpapering my screen. Thank you for cooling me off and making my day!

We just returned from 2 weeks at Lac La Belle in the Keweenaw. We enjoyed freshly picked blueberries and lots of sunshine. Spent 2 nights at Sand Hills Lighthouse on Lake Superior and it was wonderful! We'll be back in October to enjoy the color change (before the color turns to white).

Hi to all,

I just wanted to send this long over due note from a Yooper in exile,to tell you how much I enjoy your site. As a native of the Keweenaw, and local history..nut,I would like you to consider including info from your pasty makers about what "use to be there", when showing pictures of local buildings ETC. You have such a wealth of history and memories in your residents, it should be taken advantage of when possible. thanks again!

We just returned to our home from the beautiful UP area. We spent last week just driving around taking in the sights. Our favorite place was the Great Sand Bay in between Eagle River and Eagle Harbor. Our children refer to it as the "wave pool"! They had a blast when the waves were coming in. My son has attended the MTU hockey camp for the past 2 years and we will be back next year! Thanks for providing this great web-site for all of us visitors to remember your wonderful upper peninsula!

As it was 99° in the Twin Cities last week, I logged on to see the water flowing over rocks at the mouth of the Montreal River. I could FEEL the cool water massage my back as I was sitting in one of the pools in the river. Thanks for chilling me off and taking me back to a fine day in the Keweenaw.

Hi, Pasty Central! This may be too out of the way, but if you ever have a chance to catch a photo of wild blueberries or thimbleberres, I'm sure many of us "displaced Yoopers" would appreciate seeing that on screen. There are memories of sharing the berry bushes with black bears in the woods, on top of "Baldy", or at the beach, and enjoying their sweetness immediately upon returning with our buckets brimming.
